End of Year Message June 2022

DHS Weekly - June 30, 2022

Look for us on Twitter @DHarkness_CBE

Our Main Office opens on August 10th from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Please watch your emails the week of August 8th for first day instructions and updates. Teachers will be phoning students Thursday Aug. 11th and Friday Aug. 12th to let families know where to meet on the first day.

As another year draws to a close we wanted to wrap up our last weekly message with some updates for next year.

Staffing Changes: As the school year closes we will be saying good-bye to some of our staff members as they move on to other adventures:

  • Mr. Bert has been our high touch surface cleaner. This position was put in place to ensure additional cleaning during the pandemic. The end of these additional cleaning measures means that Mr. Bert’s contract is ending.

  • Ms. Sekhon was on a temporary contract with us this year and will be looking for new CBE opportunities in the coming weeks.

  • Ms. Brocke has accepted a music job at another school within the CBE.

  • Ms. LaBerge is moving to Hinton Alberta where she will be teaching Jr. High and High School Humanities and Foods.

  • Ms. Shihab will be leaving us to welcome a new addition to her family in early September.

We wish each of these valued staff members the very best and we know that #HarknessHasHeart because of their contributions and dedication.

We can confirm that we have some new staff joining us at Douglas Harkness in the Fall

  • Ms. Bains will be back at DHS, and this time she will be on a probationary contract! Congratulations Ms. Bains!

  • Ms. Ellis has accepted another temporary contract with us until Ms. Reibot returns from her maternity leave after Thanksgiving break in October. Welcome back Ms. Ellis!

  • Ms. MacLeod will be joining us as a part time Phys Ed and Wellness teacher. She comes to us with extensive experience working with complex learners at the CBE System level.

  • Ms. Reinikka-Scott will be joining the grade 1-2 team as a Division 1 Learning Leader. She is coming to us from CBE’s Piitoayis Family School.

  • Mr. Sylvester will be joining us as a part time Music teacher. He comes to us with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Education from Ambrose University.

Free Lunch Kits For Everyone: To welcome students back for the 2022-2023 school year, Rogers is teaming-up with Breakfast Club of Canada to provide free lunch kits to select schools across Canada and they have selected Douglas Harkness as one of their receiving schools! This means that ALL students at Douglas Harkness will be provided with a FREE lunch kit in August! Lunch kits will include some useful and reusable items to equip them for breakfast and lunch during the coming school year. Watch for these in your child’s backpack!

Grade configurations for next year: At this point in time we are planning on two classes of straight grades in kindergarten and grades 3, 4, 5 and 6. Our complicated numbers at the grade 1 and 2 level mean that we will have four classes of blended grade 1-2 next year. Numbers change regularly at this time of year as families move in and out of the community. Please help us finalize our class configurations by emailing the school if you will NOT be returning to Douglas Harkness in the fall.

Report Cards: Families can view student report cards ONLINE. To do this, parents and guardians must log in to MyCBE For best access to information, log in to the MyCBE Portal instead of using the PowerSchool App. Need help? Check out the video tutorials, user guides and other technical support on the MyCBE Technical Support PageYour child’s CBE ID Number is required to register for a MyCBE Account

Lunch Supervision Registration: Registration for lunch supervision will open on Monday, Aug. 15 in MyCBE. All students in Grades 1- 6 and full-day kindergarten programs staying at school during the daily lunch break must be registered and pay the annual fee.

Waiver Applications: Waiver applications for the 2022-23 school year will be available on Aug. 15 in MyCBE.

Our Main Office opens on August 10th from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Please watch your emails the week of August 8th for first day instructions and updates. Teachers will be phoning students by Friday Aug. 12th to let them know first day processes.

Enjoy your summer everyone! We look forward to seeing you back in class on August 15th.
