FUNDRAISING CASINO: A heartfelt thank you to all those who are volunteering at our casino this weekend! Without your commitment we would not be able to make an event like this happen. A special thank you to our amazing council chair Sonya who has worked tirelessly to ensure that all the volunteer positions are filled. For those of you who have not met Sonya, she doesn’t wear a cape but she IS IN FACT a real live super hero!

FALL BACK INTO LITERACY EVENT SUCCESS STORY: Our Fall Back Into Literacy events were a huge success! We had over half of our families join us for an evening of literacy games and stories, and handed out over 2000 gently used books! To top it off, students enjoyed a half hour sing along with Raffi on Friday. Don’t worry Kindergarten kids! We know you don’t have school on Fridays but Raffi said he will do a private show for you in the next week or two!!

SCHOOL WEBSITE: Please look at our Douglas Harkness School website for important information including our current Coco Brooks Pizza Fundraiser. Deadline is November 9th. Check your child’s backpack for more information.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS: are happening on the evening of November 24th and the morning of November 25th. Interviews are 15 minutes each. You will need to sign up for your interview through Power School. Please make sure you have a Power School account set up so that you can book your interview time. Interview booking will open at 8:00am on Friday November 18th and it will close at 2:00pm on the 24th. If you need help setting up your Power School account, please call the office.

STUDENT TEACHERS: We are fortunate to have 8 student teachers from the University of Calgary, St. Mary’s University, and Mount Royal University joining us at Douglas Harkness this year. Some are just starting out on their learning journey so they are with us for a half day a week all year long while others are in their 3rd or 4th year of training so they are with us every day for a few months at a time. Ask your children if they have a student teacher helping out in their classroom!

Weekly Message Oct. 22, 2022

FUNDRAISING CASINO: Our first school fundraising Casino since 2011 is happening on November 5th and 6th. Casino’s generate a lot of money for a school community to spend on new technology, materials, field trips and programs for our students at Douglas Harkness. BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP! In order to successfully complete the casino weekend, we need lots of volunteers. If you and/or a family member and/or friend are able to volunteer for a shift, please contact our school council at harknessparent@gmail.com as soon as possible. If we do not get enough volunteers we will lose this amazing opportunity to access these funds.

STAFFING UPDATE: There will be a staffing change in grade one/two beginning Monday October 24th. Due to increased enrollment, we have been able to hire an additional teacher. Ms. Dron will be phasing out her classroom duties over the next couple of weeks in order to provide targeted reading and math support to students across grades 1 to 4. Ms. Cariolato and Ms. Bains provide targeted reading and math support to students in grades 5 and 6 on Fridays.

We have interviewed and hired a wonderful new teacher and would like to welcome Stacy Pickering to our grade 1/2 team. Stacy was a student teacher in our school last year in Ms. Dron’s grade 2 classroom so she is very familiar with our school community. She graduated from Ambrose University and is ready to begin her teaching career with us on Monday. We are so happy to have her back and are excited to be able to provide this additional, targeted reading and math support for our students!

HALLOWEEN: The tradition of celebrating Halloween at Douglas Harkness School includes an opportunity for students to dress up in costumes, if they wish. This year, the day that children may dress up at school is Monday, October 31st. Students may wear their costumes for the entire day. If your child does not have a costume they can also wear black and/or orange if they would like. It is important that you consider the following when planning for your child’s Halloween costume:

  • Please leave costume props such as wands and weapons at home so that they don’t get lost, forgotten, or damaged at school

  • Please refrain from sending your child in a costume with a mask as we need to identify all the children in our learning community.

Due to health precautions, allergies and dietary restrictions, please do not send treats from home for sharing on that day. Also, please do not send candy to school for your child’s snack or lunch on the days following Halloween. Sugar and learning don’t mix. Thank you for your help with this.

FAMILY LITERACY (reading) NIGHT AND FREE BOOK FAIR: We would like to invite families to join us at the school on the evening of Thursday November 3rd. Doors will be open between 4:30 and 6:00pm for you to visit different reading activity stations around the school with your child. We will also have a free used book fair in the gym that evening where you can take home a free book to enjoy with your family. The book fair will have books for children as well as books for adults. These books are being generously donated by other CBE schools and members of the wider Calgary community.

WINTER IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER! We knew that the beautiful fall weather wouldn’t be around forever and that the snow would eventually fall. For many of our students, this weekend will be the first time they have ever seen snow!!! How exciting!!! If you need help with winter clothing for your child(ren) please let the office or your child’s teacher know. We have some used winter boots, snow pants, jackets, hats, and mitts in our community closet that we can send home with your child.

Welcome Back 2022-23

Look for us on Twitter @DHarkness_CBE

Welcome Back Douglas Harkness Families!

This is your first “DHS Weekly Message” of the 2022-23 school year!

To those of you who are returning for another year with us, welcome! To those of you who are new to Douglas Harkness, we can't wait to meet you and your child(ren) on Monday!! You have come to a great place!

Your child's grade team has been busy setting up inviting and engaging learning spaces for your child(ren). They have made phone calls to all families outlining were to meet on Monday morning. They left messages for those who were not home to answer the call. I will sum it up in the information below…

LUNCH KITS! As mentioned at the end of June, each child will be given a lunch kit generously donated by Rogers Communications and Breakfast Clubs of Canada. Our hope was to send these kits home on day one however the kits are all similar in shape and colour so we have decided to hang onto them at the school for a few days to make sure they are all appropriately labeled with your child’s name before we send them home. You can anticipate getting the lunch kit sometime during the SECOND WEEK OF SCHOOL. Kindergarten teachers might hold onto the kits until October when the kids are better able to recognize their names. In the meantime, please use last year’s lunch kit or a plastic bag. We will get the kits to you as soon as we can. I promise they are worth the wait! Check out our Twitter account for a sneak peek at all the goodies inside the kits!!

WHAT TO BRING TO SCHOOL and WHAT TO LEAVE AT HOME  School supplies are provided by the school. Please send your child with a lunch, a snack, a backpack, and a pair of running shoes that they can leave at school. Please do not send toys, gaming devices, or cell phones to school with your child. We are not responsible for the loss or damage of valuable items.

FIRST DAY IS MONDAY AUGUST 15, 2022 We will be gathering on the back field at 8:20am. Please look for your child's grade poster. From there, you will be able to follow the teachers to the assigned entry and exit door so that you will know where to pick your child up at 3:25pm. If your child will be walking home alone, please let their teacher know at that time.

MEET THE TEACHER OPEN HOUSE We are excited to have our families back in the building this year and we have a few evening events planned in the fall and spring. Our first event is “Meet the Teacher” which will happen on Thursday August 25th.

KINDERGARTEN will be a full day program from Monday to Thursday for the 2022-23 school year. There is no Kindergarten on Fridays this year.

BELL TIMES doors open at 8:25am and classes start at 8:30am. Lunch is from 12:00-12:50pm. School ends at 3:25pm Monday to Thursday and at 11:45am on Fridays.

We look forward to an exciting year of learning!

End of Year Message June 2022

DHS Weekly - June 30, 2022

Look for us on Twitter @DHarkness_CBE

Our Main Office opens on August 10th from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Please watch your emails the week of August 8th for first day instructions and updates. Teachers will be phoning students Thursday Aug. 11th and Friday Aug. 12th to let families know where to meet on the first day.

As another year draws to a close we wanted to wrap up our last weekly message with some updates for next year.

Staffing Changes: As the school year closes we will be saying good-bye to some of our staff members as they move on to other adventures:

  • Mr. Bert has been our high touch surface cleaner. This position was put in place to ensure additional cleaning during the pandemic. The end of these additional cleaning measures means that Mr. Bert’s contract is ending.

  • Ms. Sekhon was on a temporary contract with us this year and will be looking for new CBE opportunities in the coming weeks.

  • Ms. Brocke has accepted a music job at another school within the CBE.

  • Ms. LaBerge is moving to Hinton Alberta where she will be teaching Jr. High and High School Humanities and Foods.

  • Ms. Shihab will be leaving us to welcome a new addition to her family in early September.

We wish each of these valued staff members the very best and we know that #HarknessHasHeart because of their contributions and dedication.

We can confirm that we have some new staff joining us at Douglas Harkness in the Fall

  • Ms. Bains will be back at DHS, and this time she will be on a probationary contract! Congratulations Ms. Bains!

  • Ms. Ellis has accepted another temporary contract with us until Ms. Reibot returns from her maternity leave after Thanksgiving break in October. Welcome back Ms. Ellis!

  • Ms. MacLeod will be joining us as a part time Phys Ed and Wellness teacher. She comes to us with extensive experience working with complex learners at the CBE System level.

  • Ms. Reinikka-Scott will be joining the grade 1-2 team as a Division 1 Learning Leader. She is coming to us from CBE’s Piitoayis Family School.

  • Mr. Sylvester will be joining us as a part time Music teacher. He comes to us with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Education from Ambrose University.

Free Lunch Kits For Everyone: To welcome students back for the 2022-2023 school year, Rogers is teaming-up with Breakfast Club of Canada to provide free lunch kits to select schools across Canada and they have selected Douglas Harkness as one of their receiving schools! This means that ALL students at Douglas Harkness will be provided with a FREE lunch kit in August! Lunch kits will include some useful and reusable items to equip them for breakfast and lunch during the coming school year. Watch for these in your child’s backpack!

Grade configurations for next year: At this point in time we are planning on two classes of straight grades in kindergarten and grades 3, 4, 5 and 6. Our complicated numbers at the grade 1 and 2 level mean that we will have four classes of blended grade 1-2 next year. Numbers change regularly at this time of year as families move in and out of the community. Please help us finalize our class configurations by emailing the school if you will NOT be returning to Douglas Harkness in the fall.

Report Cards: Families can view student report cards ONLINE. To do this, parents and guardians must log in to MyCBE For best access to information, log in to the MyCBE Portal instead of using the PowerSchool App. Need help? Check out the video tutorials, user guides and other technical support on the MyCBE Technical Support PageYour child’s CBE ID Number is required to register for a MyCBE Account

Lunch Supervision Registration: Registration for lunch supervision will open on Monday, Aug. 15 in MyCBE. All students in Grades 1- 6 and full-day kindergarten programs staying at school during the daily lunch break must be registered and pay the annual fee.

Waiver Applications: Waiver applications for the 2022-23 school year will be available on Aug. 15 in MyCBE.

Our Main Office opens on August 10th from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Please watch your emails the week of August 8th for first day instructions and updates. Teachers will be phoning students by Friday Aug. 12th to let them know first day processes.

Enjoy your summer everyone! We look forward to seeing you back in class on August 15th.
