If you are interested in current issues, looking to develop your public speaking skills, or wanting to try something new and meet like-minded people, you would make a great Debate Team member! There is no requirement for previous experience.
We hold practices after school until approximately 5:15 p.m. on Tuesdays. At these practices, members will learn from a University of Calgary debate competitor who coaches the team on debate skills such as research, technique, and speaking skills. Members also have the chance to apply these skills in practice debates.
You will have the opportunity to attend several debates hosted by Calgary and area high schools beginning in September/October. There may also be additional opportunities related to this club for you to pursue independently, such as mock trials and parliaments. In preparation for debates, participants are required to research topics, write speeches for both the affirmative and negative side, as well as practice their delivery.
Debating is a skill that is widely applicable with many benefits. Through learning to debate and public speak, students will develop excellent written and oral communication skills, excellent critical thinking skills, effective research and organizational skills, strategies to overcome fears of public speaking, and discover the confidence to speak and participate in class. While these skills are applicable to almost all career fields, students who are interested in careers in law and politics will benefit greatly from the skills developed in debate.
We would really love to have you on the team this year! If you are interested, please come see Ms. Bodzioch in Room 139 for more information or join us at our next practice in Room 139.
