School Organization and Curriculum

Our school can be characterized as a community of learners. Within our learning community, each child has membership, each child has equal access to learning opportunities, and each child’s unique experiences (background, family, and cultural) are valued.

We believe that our school culture emphasizes the significance and importance of children and their learning.  Learning can achieve great heights when children have ownership and when learning is meaningful and relevant. Motivation is directly linked to learning.

Our school is organized to best meet the needs of children within seven classrooms. Given this reality, classrooms are most often a blend of combined grades. The purpose of these groupings is to ensure a reasonable class size as well as to provide the best learning environment for children by:

  • Keeping the student-teacher ratio as low as possible in allowing a more equitable distribution of students.
  • Promoting opportunities for students and teachers to be together for two years whenever possible.

The curriculum provides the basic foundation of learning experiences. Curriculum within our school is not viewed in a narrow, linear fashion but rather as continuous, seamless, and expansive. It emphasizes the connectedness of knowledge and learning and the understanding that prior experiences shape the construction of new knowledge.

​​​Regular Program at the CBE

Even though most of our schools offer a regular program, no two are quite the same. All schools teach according to Alberta Education’s mandated curriculum, however a school’s focus, optional courses and school activities are as unique as every school.​​​

​​Middle Years at the CBE

Middle years learning refers to education offered to students between the ages of 10-15. These years are critical in keeping our students on the path to high school completion and their career futures. Keys for student success include: participating in hands-on, purposeful and relevant learning; creating positive relationships with peers, teachers and other adults; and being actively involved in the community and feeling supported by family, businesses and other organizations that surround them.

​​​​Exploring Career Choices

For Grades 5 to 9 at the CBE, we offer Career & Technology Foundations (CTF). This is an inquiry-based, hands-on program that focuses on essential skills common to occupational areas, and our students personalize their learning based on their interests and passions.​​​
