Principal's Message

Wednesday Principal Update - Sept. 22

Dear DGS Families,
Our students participated in Student Vote this past Monday- it was an excellent opportunity for adolescents to experience what it is like to participate in the democratic process. We appreciated learning about the issues facing our nation and students took up the work of understanding party platforms in the weeks leading up to the federal election. This provided foundational learning for students in Grade 6 as they learn about different levels of governments and what it takes to organize a school-wide election.

Mr. Bews and I want to share how much we love watching your kiddos play and socialize at lunch. Truly, they are playing,  even our Grade 9’s - volleyball circles, crossnet games, basketball on the compound, kids lounging on the field, hanging out with friends and talking- to each other, to us, to their teachers. We are really seeing the benefits to asking students to have their mobile devices put away all day long, and having our campus closed at lunch- our goal is to put “fun” back into the functional parts of school and help our students (and ourselves) rediscover social connection. Healthy Hunger restarts tomorrow, and we hope this takes some of the monotony out of making lunches. The servery has also been re-opened. A variety of healthier choice snack items are available for purchase daily. Kudos  to our  Grade 8 and 9 students who are working in the servery at lunch- their dedication makes a big difference.

I also want to thank our families and students who expressed care and concern for our common spaces at school in the last week. Our students stepped up in the process of resolving the vandalism at DGS, and we were able to work with all students involved and their families. Our goal is always to foster responsible choices in adolescents and teach them the skills to navigate social media influences. I get the sense that the incidents sparked a lot of conversation at home around student conduct, good decision making, and what happens when things go wrong. I appreciate the discussions families have had together.

Our first few interschool athletics events are now in the books- we had a great turn out for our Girl’s Soccer Home Game on Monday. Our outdoor events are open to spectators. A reminder that all indoor events will remain closed to parents, drivers and spectators for the time being. We are not able to make exceptions regarding this direction. Our goal is to ensure interschool athletics remains a part of our healthy, vibrant, community and following the guidelines provided by the CBE is a big part of this.

Please enjoy this short week! Teachers will be engaged in Individual Program Planning and Student Learning Team work this Friday.
