Principal's Message

Wednesday Principal Update - September 21

Dear DGS Families,
It’s hard to believe, but we are now into our third full week of school! Students and teachers have made great use of learning opportunities using the natural spaces around our school. Students have spent time at the ridge and the ponds in Cranston as a means of connecting to the land where we gather, trees and forests, our interactions with ecosystems and learning about biodiversity. We are very fortunate to be in the middle of a community with so much natural space available. This week has also marked our Grade 8 students being able to participate in Riverwatch, an award-winning guided river experience on the Bow River. The purpose of Riverwatch is to explore a section of our local river during a 10 km raft float trip. Along the way, students make shoreline stops to perform water sampling and water quality testing above and below a wastewater treatment plant and use that data to understand the health of the local ecosystem.
Learning Opportunities Related to September 30 National Day of Truth and Reconciliation
During the week of September 26 to September 30, students will be participating in a variety of learning opportunities across all Grade Levels related to acknowledging and understanding our National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. Details will follow from classroom teachers related to specific learning activities at different grade levels.  Our students are invited to our Learning Commons to explore our updated collection of fiction and non-fiction resources related to Indigenous Learning, Indigenous Histories, Residential Schools and their survivors, and how we understand the world around us. Students and staff are encouraged to wear Orange on Thursday September 29. We look forward to sharing our learning from this week, as well as our ongoing work in this area, with you.
Meet the Teacher Night
Thank you all so much for the incredible support of our school community as we held Meet the Teacher Night as a more informal, family and community centered event. The feedback we have received so far is that the event was greatly appreciated, and families were excited for the opportunity to connect with teachers and with each other. Please know that you can reach out to your child’s teachers at any time for a more formal conversation about their progress, growth, and achievement.
Student Assessment Information in PowerSchool
Starting September 30, assessment information related to your student’s achievement in all core areas will be released for parents to view. This information will be released every two weeks in all core areas and will include a variety of formative (current learning, anecdotals, comments, ongoing) and summative (outcomes based, connected explicitly to report card stems and indicators, related to projects, larger assignments and tests) assessment information. Information related to exploratories and PE and Health will be released every six weeks. Our recommendation is to take the time every second weekend to review this information with your student- it won’t take more than a few minutes and will help to paint a more complete picture of how a student is progressing in different areas of study. This information can also form the basis for questions and conversations with teachers in the time leading up to formal Parent Teacher Student Conferences in late November.
Safety at School
Six times a year, we are required to complete Fire Drills with our students. Last Wednesday, we held our first Fire Drill of the year. It is clear that our students understand the importance of these events and we want to thank all of our students for being calm and careful in how they exit and return to the building. On Tuesday September 27, we will be joined by members of Calgary Police Service to complete a practice lock-down at our school. Please note that we do this in the spirit of safety and emergency preparedness. Students will be well looked after and teachers will take time the day before to review what’s required of students. We endeavor to complete these drills in a calm, caring fashion, and to attend to individual student needs in the moment.
Skateboards and Scooters
Our students are reminded that we are not equipped to store skateboards and scooters inside of the school, either in the office or classrooms. The options are to either use the locking skateboard and scooter racks outside of the building or leave these items at home. We are not able to provide locks through the office.
Clubs and Athletics
With the re-launch of both interschool athletics and extra-curricular activities such as clubs and rehearsals, we want to clarify where to go for information related to try-outs, games, club meetings and the like. All information related to these fantastic opportunities will be posted to our school website and updated regularly. Information for students and parents is located at: (Revolving News Articles for Athletics) (Club Information- to be updated this week)
The Servery is now open and lunches are available for order through Healthy Hunger. We have greatly enjoyed working with our students to set up lunchtime activities and quiet “chill out” spaces for students to enjoy.
Mobile Devices:
Students continue to participate fully in “Away for the Day.” We really appreciate parents and guardians supporting us in this endeavor.  It's been remarkable to watch students socialize more actively, engage in games, and avoid the pitfalls of technology distraction during class time. Families are reminded that they can always call the main office should they need to contact their child during the school day and there is a phone available in the main office for student use.
All volunteers need current forms completed and Police Information Checks, which we are happy to help with in the main office. Please complete the attached Annual Volunteer Registration Form and read the attached information on Police Clearances.
