Wednesday Principal Update - May 11

Dear DGS Families,

As of today, our Grade 6 and 9 students have completed Part A of their English Language Arts exams. We view this as just one more opportunity to gather information about student learning. Our students have put great effort and thought into their writing and we appreciate everyone’s commitment to our successful return to this task.

Taking it on the Road

Last Friday and on May 28, Ms. Thomas will be taking our Grade 9 Band students on the road for musical performances at Sibylla Kiddle School and Cranston School. Our instrumental music program has loved being able to get back to performing - music really is one of those gifts that washes away the dust of everyday life.

School Wide Musical: Raise Your Voice, Jr.

After a 2 year hiatus we are overjoyed to announce the live performance of this year’s musical revue, Raise Your Voice, Jr. This hour long show contains over a dozen, sure to entertain hits. From classics like, “Guys and Dolls” to modern day favorite’s like, “High School Musical”, there is something for everyone! Evening performance is on Thursday June 2 at 7:00pm. Doors open at 6:30. Tickets will be available at the door ($5 for adults, $2 for kids). Snacks and drinks will also be available - please bring cash as we won’t be able to accept card payments

Big Chief Fundraiser

Dr. George Stanley School is excited to partner with Big Chief Meat Snacks for our next fundraiser! Big Chief is a local Calgary company that has been making meat snacks for over 50 years. The products are made with 100% Canadian beef, come in six flavours, are shelf stable, and gluten free. We will earn 30-40% of the total sales which will help Parent Council assist the school by paying for items like busses for field trips, extra gym equipment, and so much more. Orders will be accepted online beginning Monday May 16 through Monday June 6; and will be ready by June 17.

We are looking forward to making this fundraiser a BIG hit! Thank you in advance for your help and participation!

Grade 9 Farewell

Our Grade 9 Farewell Ceremony will take place at 10:00am in the main gym on Friday June 10, 2022. This event is intended for Grade 9 students and their family members. If parents wish to have younger siblings who attend DGS included in the audience, we ask that you let the younger siblings homeroom teacher know and have them meet you in the foyer just before 10:00am. We anticipate the formal program will be finished by 11:15am. A short, outdoor reception for Grade 9 students and their families will take place following the ceremony. This will be an informal reception, with the focus being on photo opportunities, and gathering together over light refreshments and music in the back yard area. Tickets are NOT required to attend the Ceremony and Reception. More details concerning the fieldtrip to Calaway Park will be sent closer to the date.

Potential Transportation Delays and Interruptions for Bus Routes

We are aware of ongoing issues with transportation service that have impacted our school this week. We are working closely with CBE Transportation and Southland to address these concerns.

Transportation service providers are currently facing increased staffing pressures. While the majority of routes have assigned drivers, service providers are challenged to provide coverage when there is a driver absence, a mechanical issue, or a delay at a previous school. We have been fortunate insofar as these are the first days of long delays we have experienced this school year. We know that does not lessen the inconvenience of transportation delays.

It's important to note that there may be service disruption to either of our bus routes for Dr. George Stanley School between now and June 30. When this occurs, the route will likely be covered by spare drivers and there may be significant delays to scheduled pick-up or drop-off times. Please have a backup plan in case school bus transportation is unavailable.

Families are responsible for checking for delays, as the school may not always be able to send a School Messenger message. Delays are posted on www.myschoolbusmonitor.ca and through Southland's MyBusStop App each shift as early as possible. We highly recommend signing up for push email notifications on www.myschoolbusmonitor.ca or refer to the website and app.
