Wednesday Principal Update - May 25

Dear DGS Families,

In case you are keeping track, it’s June next week- how did that happen? There’s lots going on at DGS to keep everybody’s little paws busy and we are excited about the school wide events we are preparing for in the weeks to come!

Exploratory Course Selection

By June 1, 2022, students currently in Grades 6-8 will receive a link to be able to select their exploratory courses for next year in PowerSchool. This survey will come with a detailed description of course offerings. Students will be asked to select at least 5 courses they would like to be able to take next tear (Band counts as two courses) and they will be registered into 4 of those choices. This is our first year using PowerScheduler, and we are excited to be able to have student data in real time around course selections. Families with students entering Grade 6 do not need to complete Exploratory Course Registration, as students will experience a preset group of exploratories in order to prepare them for great things to come.

Transportation Registration

Eligible Families can register their child for yellow school bus transportation services using their MyCBE account. Families must register by Thursday, June 8 for students to be added to routes for the start of the next school year. Late registrations can take up to six weeks to process and we are unable to provide transportation during this time. Families can cancel their registration by September 30 2022 without penalty.

School Wide Musical: Raise Your Voice, Jr.

After a 2 year hiatus we are overjoyed to announce the live performance of this year’s musical revue, Raise Your Voice, Jr. This hour long show contains over a dozen, sure to entertain hits. From classics like, “Guys and Dolls” to modern day favorite’s like, “High School Musical”, there is something for everyone! Evening performance is on Thursday June 2 at 7:00pm. Doors open at 6:30. Tickets will be available at the door ($5 for adults, $2 for kids). Snacks and drinks will also be available - please bring cash as we won’t be able to accept card payments.

Big Chief Fundraiser

Dr. George Stanley School is excited to partner with Big Chief Meat Snacks for our next fundraiser! Big Chief is a local Calgary company that has been making meat snacks for over 50 years. The products are made with 100% Canadian beef, come in six flavours, are shelf stable, and gluten free. We will earn 30-40% of the total sales which will help Parent Council assist the school by paying for items like busses for field trips, extra gym equipment, and so much more. Orders will be accepted online beginning Monday May 16 through Monday June 6; and will be ready by June 17.

We are looking forward to making this fundraiser a BIG hit! Thank you in advance for your help and participation!

Grade 9 Farewell

Our Grade 9 Farewell Ceremony will take place at 10:00am in the main gym on Friday June 10, 2022. This event is intended for Grade 9 students and their family members. If parents wish to have younger siblings who attend DGS included in the audience, we ask that you let the younger siblings homeroom teacher know and have them meet you in the foyer just before 10:00am. We anticipate the formal program will be finished by 11:15am. A short, outdoor reception for Grade 9 students and their families will take place following the ceremony. This will be an informal reception, with the focus being on photo opportunities, and gathering together over light refreshments and music in the back yard area. Tickets are NOT required to attend the Ceremony and Reception. More details concerning the fieldtrip to Calaway Park will be sent closer to the date.
