Wednesday Principal Update - June 1

Dear DGS Families,

We did it! It’s June! The lilacs are in bloom, our bike racks are full, and the next month is filled with athletic events, fine arts events, learning, laughter, welcoming new faces and saying farewell to some very familiar ones.

Exploratory Course Selections for 2022-2023

By the end of this week, students currently in Grades 6-8 will receive a link to be able to select their exploratory courses for next year in PowerSchool. This survey will come with a detailed description of course offerings. Students will be asked to select at least 5 courses they would like to be able to take next year (Band counts as two courses) and they will be enrolled into 4 of those choices. This is our first year using PowerScheduler, and we are excited to be able to have student data in real time around course selections. Families with students entering Grade 6 do not need to complete Exploratory Course Registration, as students will experience a preset group of exploratories in order to prepare them for great things to come.

School Wide Musical: Raise Your Voice, Jr.

Thursday June 2 marks the return of our Musical. Students will perform for our incoming Grade 6 students in the afternoon at their dress rehearsal and the full show runs at 7:00pm tomorrow night. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students at the door. Everyone is welcome to attend. There are no ticket presales this year. Doors open at 6:30pm - the concession stand will operate from 6:30-7:00pm (CASH ONLY). Come on out and support the arts!

Grade 9 Farewell - UPDATE

Our Grade 9 Farewell Ceremony will take place at 10:00am in the main gym on Friday June 10, 2022. Parents and family members are welcome into the building at 9:30am. This event is intended for Grade 9 students and their family members. School will start at 8:15am as usual. If a Grade 9 student is going to arrive late this day, they are asked to sign in through the office no later than 9:15am so teachers can organize their students. If parents wish to have younger siblings who attend DGS included in the audience, we ask that you let the younger siblings homeroom teacher know and have them meet you in the foyer when you arrive at the school. We anticipate the formal program will be finished by 11:15am. A short, outdoor reception for Grade 9 students and their families will take place following the ceremony. This will be an informal reception, with the focus being on photo opportunities, and gathering over light refreshments and music in the backyard area. We want to thank our Parent Fundraising Society for their generous support of our décor and refreshments for this event - it is very, very appreciated. Tickets are NOT required to attend the Ceremony and Reception. More details concerning the field trip to Calaway Park will be sent closer to the date.

Track Meet Information

Please check the website for the most up-to-date announcements for Track and Field - with over 100 athletes participating in next Monday’s meet, we want to thank all of our coaches for managing the fun and games! Go 67s!!!!

Outdoor Gaga Ball Pit Coming to DGS

We are excited to announce that an outdoor Gaga Ball Pit will be installed in our Backyard area over the summer. This has been a labour of love for our Parent Fundraising Society and School Leadership since DGS opened and we are excited to see it come to fruition.

Transportation Registration

Eligible families should register their child for yellow school bus transportation services using their MyCBE account. Families must register by Thursday, June 8 for students to be added to routes for the start of the next school year. For families living in Riverstone and Seton, bus registration supports our transportation department with planning stop locations in those areas. Late registrations can take up to six weeks to process and we are unable to provide transportation during this time. Families can cancel their registration by September 30, 2022, without penalty.

Big Chief Fundraiser

Dr. George Stanley School is excited to partner with Big Chief Meat Snacks for our next fundraiser! Big Chief is a local Calgary company that has been making meat snacks for over 50 years. The products are made with 100% Canadian beef, come in six flavours, are shelf stable, and gluten free. We will earn 30-40% of the total sales which will help Parent Council assist the school by paying for items like buses for field trips, extra gym equipment, and so much more. Orders will be accepted online beginning Monday May 16 through Monday June 6; and will be ready by June 17.

We are looking forward to making this fundraiser a BIG hit! Thank you in advance for your help and participation!
