Dear DGS Families,
It’s COLD OUT THERE! (But I like it!) We’ve been having a great time during indoor lunch. Teachers have been setting up and hosting spaces for students to participate in different activities and students who want to go outside are enjoying the snow, movement break and incredibly fresh air. Teenagers have the uncanny ability to appear completely fine in a hoodie and sneakers- I always remind them that it’s a fine line between courage and, well, common sense.
With the onset of this cold weather, we want to make sure everyone has the same information around soft entry, lunchtime, etc. Soft Entry starts at 8:00. We do not open the doors before this time. As of 8:00, teachers are on supervision inside and outside of the building. At lunch, all students are expected to be outside for half of their lunchtime unless the temperature with windchill is colder than -20 degrees Celsius. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather. We do provide outdoor supervision at lunchtime for students who are committed to being polar bears.
Yesterday, a group of our Grade 8’s were honoured to spend time with Elder Peter Weasel Moccasin and Paula Smith from the Kainai and Piikani First Nations. Elder Peter shared important stories and lessons from his lifetime and our students were encouraged to consider the worldview of our Blackfoot People on Treaty 7 Land. During our whole staff meeting later in the day, Paula helped us to contextualize both the lives of indigenous youth historically and in 2022. We want to thank them both for the gift of their time, their wisdom and conversations with us.
Remembrance Day Ceremony
On Thursday November 10 2022, our school will participate in a virtual Remembrance Day Ceremony prepared by our Grade 8 Leadership students. This ceremony will mark the contributions to peacekeeping efforts made by our Canadian service members, as well as consider the historical significance of symbols such as the poppy. If you do not wish for your child to participate in this ceremony, please let their homeroom teacher know and we will make other arrangements for them during this time. Our participation in the 2022 Veteran’s Food Drive will continue through until November 14, 2022. We want to thank our families for their support of this initiative.
Lost & Found
Please encourage your child(ren) to check the Lost & Found often for any forgotten belongings. There is a high number of items that have accumulated there. Any items remaining on November 10 will be donated.
Go Nuts for Donuts
Parent Fundraising Society is happy to sponsor an opportunity to purchase Red and While Sprinkle Texas Donuts for delivery on Friday November 18.
