Welcome Back!

Dear Dr. Gordon Townsend School Families,

On behalf of the staff at Dr. Gordon Townsend School, I would like to welcome all students and their families to the 2022-2023 school year.  As a staff, we are incredibly excited to welcome back our students, and reconnect with our families.

I am pleased to welcome Andrea Byrne, Assistant Principal to our team this year.

Andrea joins our team from Sir John A. MacDonald School.  She has a background supporting students with complex needs and her expertise will be a great asset to our team.

Our first day of school Monday, August 15th.  Classroom teams will contact each family prior to August 15th to go over all important back to school information.

Some reminders for a smooth start-up:

  • Please be sure to contact the school regarding student absences and lates.  Parent(s)/guardian(s) are reminded of the importance that regular attendance and punctuality have on long-term student academic growth and success.

  • Please make sure that your demographic information is up-to-date and correct so that the school can contact you in a timely manner.

We look forward to connecting with all our students and caregivers in the coming days and weeks as we begin our exciting 2022-2023 learning journey.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or Andrea Bryne, Assistant Principal, throughout the course of the year.

Principal Message

Dear Dr. Gordon Townsend Families,

The month of December is upon us.  We are well into the school year and we are so proud of our students’ growth in the first four months of the school year.

In addition, our staff have engaged in significant learning through professional development that incorporates Indigenous ways of knowing and the holistic life-long learning framework. Working with Elders and Knowledge Keepers, staff at DGTS are enhancing their understandings of the ways in which Indigenous-Ways of Knowing can enhance student’s ability to make literacy and numeracy connections with the world around them and enhance student’s self-regulation skills.

Both staff and students in all of our programs have started to learn from the land Classrooms set a common inquiry goal: How can connecting with Indigenous ways of Knowing help us inspire, heal, relate and learn Some students have engaged with Elders in online teachings Others students have gone outside to engage in sit spots, walk alongs and sharing circles We are capturing student’s learning from the land in a document panel located in the hallway at DGTS You can also follow the learning journey on Twitter @DGTS_Tigers.

Just a reminder that winter break begins on December 18 – January 5.  The last day of classes is Friday, December 17th and we return to school on Thursday, January 6th, 2022.

On behalf of all of the staff at DGTS, we wish you all a safe and joyful winter break.
