Principal's Message

September 2020

Welcome back to the 2020/21 school year! I hope you had a restful summer and are happy with your decision to send your children back to school or participate in the Hub online learning that is being offered due to COVID 19.

We are so pleased with how our staff and students have responded and taken up the challenge of increased safety procedures & protocols. Some of the changes include increased hand washing and/or sanitizing, reminders to physical distancing as much as possible, and remaining with cohort groups whenever possible. The information available to us can change as we take our direction from Alberta Health, so please refer to CBE Mask Guidelines (on the CBE home page https://www.cbe.ab.ca/Pages/default.aspx ) for more up to date information about masks in school.

I would like to thank all parents for sending your child(ren) only on the staggered entry day that was designated to them. Splitting classes for the first 3 days to allow for smaller group instruction on these changes was very helpful, and we received many positive comments from parents, students and staff. We will continue to remind our students of these changes to regular school processes throughout the year, and with your help as parents, we hope this will become second nature for our students.

Here is some important information to help you get ready for the new school year!

Hub:
Hub on-line learning is available for grade 1 to 4 students at our school. Since kindergarten is not mandatory in Alberta, parents of kindergarten children have the option to keep their children at home or attend in-person classes at Dr. J.K. Mulloy.  Parents wishing additional information regarding kindergarten are encouraged to visit the CBE's Kindergarten webpage. If you have not yet sent your kindergarten child to school but plan to do so later in the fall, it is recommended that the kindergarten student be in attendance on or before September 30, which is our student count date for funding.

Hub registration is now closed and students who are registered in the Hub will have the opportunity to re-join in person classes on February 1st, 2021 when parents may request to move their child from hub back to our school. The request needs to be made in writing to the school principal by Jan. 8. Hub students remain attached to Dr. J.K. Mulloy School. For more information on the Hub https://cbe.ab.ca/about-us/school-culture-and-environment/health-and-wellness-in-school/Pages/hub-online-learning.aspx

Transportation:
There have been some changes to transportation this year. For the most up to date information, please check out Busing & Transportation web page https://www.cbe.ab.ca/schools/busing-and-transportation/Pages/transportation-for-alternative-programs.aspx

If your child will be traveling to school on the school bus, please ensure that they are at their designated bus stop at least 7 minutes before your scheduled departure time. For the first few weeks when your child arrives at school, we will mark the bus letter on their hand that corresponds to the bus they arrived on in the morning. My Bus Stop app is a great way to find out the location of your child's bus and the estimated time of arrival at each stop. During the registration process you will be asked for a unique School Code. The alphanumeric code for Dr. J.K. Mulloy School 2020-2021 is: CBE0IN7S7Y
Uniforms:
We know that parents who choose TLC support students wearing uniforms. Each Monday is formal uniform day and Tuesdays to Thursdays are typically informal uniform days. There also may be fieldtrips or other special event days that are designated formal uniform days, and you can always check on our website if you are unsure of which uniform is expected. With our switch from half day kindergarten, Tuesday/Thursday kindergarten students will wear formal uniforms on Tuesdays. If students arrive to school without the proper uniform, they will receive a uniform notice to help them (and their parents) better understand the guidelines. We do have a few uniform items that we normally would lend to students, but due to COVID we will not be lending these items until further notice. If you choose to supplement your child's uniform with pieces purchased somewhere other than McCarthy's, please be sure those items meet the TLC Student Uniform Requirements. All school uniform shoes need to be ALL black including the soles. If you are experiencing financial difficulties and are having trouble purchasing uniforms, please call the school to book an appointment with me to discuss your options before the end of September.
Staffing Update:
We are delighted to welcome Crystal Gleeson & Andrew Little to our teaching team! We are also excited to welcome back Stephanie Gauthier. Brett Toner will be teaching for Caitlin Oakes, and Brittany Taylor will be teaching for Allison Etwaroo while they are on leave. Pat Burge will be joining our ELL team.
School Council:
Every parent of a student at Dr. J.K. Mulloy is automatically a member of the School Council, which meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30pm. We are not sure at this time whether the council meetings will be in person (with physical distancing & mask expectations) in the school learning commons or online, so stay tuned and we will let you know as soon as possible!
Whether you are joining us for in person learning or learning online...welcome back!
Sincerely,
Anne Markovich
Principal
