March 2021

As the days are getting longer and the warmer weather is just around the corner and I can't believe how the year is flying by!

Student Learning Conferences

It is almost time again for Student Learning Conferences, which will be online through Microsoft TEAMS on March 11 & 12 for all students (including Hub students) at Dr. J.K. Mulloy School. Bookings for Parent Teacher Conferences will open March 6th at 8:00am

The Calgary Board of Education uses your “My CBE Powerschool Account" to create an appointment with your child's teacher.  This is the same process you followed in previous years to create an appointment to see your child's teacher. If you are new to the CBE or need help to access your account, please follow the steps outlined below.  If you have been contacted by an interpreter, your conference will already have been booked for you for the time your interpreter discussed. From the Dr. J.K. Mulloy Website   https://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/DrJKMulloy/Pages/default.aspx scroll down to click on the blue MY CBE POWERSCHOOL ACCOUNT button on the bottom right or go directly to the site at https://sis.cbe.ab.ca/public/

Please ensure that you are using the same email you provided to the school when logging in to book your conference.

CBE is using Microsoft Teams to host our conferences. As all Conferences are ONLINE only, we recommended that you download the free Microsoft TEAMS app on the machine or device you will be using for the conference, to ensure you can easily join the conference at your designated meeting time!

Although it is strongly encouraged, parents do not need to have MS Teams installed to view the conference.  Please save the invitation that is emailed to you and simply click the link a minute or two prior to your appointment. If you are experiencing difficulties connecting with your child's teacher, please don't hesitate to call the school and we will try our best to help you out!

CBE High School Engagement

Although your children who currently attend Dr. J.K. Mulloy are still in elementary school, we know that many of you have questions about High School designations & programs for your children. The CBE understands that it is important that students have access to quality learning opportunities across all our schools. About 90 per cent of CBE students are typically enrolled in the regular program, which is offered at all high schools. Although the TLC program is only offered from Kindergarten to Grade 9, students can also choose to enrol in academic enrichment and alternative programs offered at certain high schools. Our goal is to enable students to access a range of programming, while balancing enrolment at our high schools. CBE has been working to ensure that parents, students, staff and members of the public are informed and are asking for feedback on 2 scenarios presented Feb 22, 2021.  The High School Engagement Scenarios shared with the public can be found at https://www.cbe.ab.ca/news-centre/Pages/cbe-shares-high-school-engagement-scenarios-news-release.aspx There are many ways you can participate and share your feedback on the scenarios that were presented:

Online Survey – March 2 – 17

Idea Boards – March 1 -17

Virtual Sessions - March 2, 4, 8, 10

CBE values feedback and here is a short video https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh7wW-Vt6J_v0uD4ftUEwdA/videos available in 12 different languages that explains how important your opinions are, and how much we value your participation.

Spring Break

The last day before Spring Break is Friday March 26, and classes will resume on Tuesday April 6, 2021! We hope you all enjoy a well deserved break to spend some quality time with your families. This is an excellent time to have your children bring their indoor shoes (dress &/or gym) home to ensure that they still fit, as we know children typically have growth spurts throughout the school year and often need a new pair of shoes for their growing feet. It is an excellent time to have students take a look through our Lost & Found to reclaim any items that they may have lost or forgotten about. This is also a good time to check that your child's uniform pieces fit well and are labeled with their name. As you can imagine, 500 or so green cardigans can become easily mixed up especially when students warm up after exercising in the gym or out at recess. On any given day we typically see at least 10 unlabeled cardigans in our Lost & Found. As we know these are expensive uniform pieces, we make an effort to get them back to students but this is much more difficult if they are not clearly labeled.

We know that our parents value our school uniform as an important part of the TLC program. We appreciate your commitment to ensuring your child arrives at school daily in the appropriate uniform. If you are not sure of the expectations, please refer to the TLC Uniform Requirements https://www.cbe.ab.ca/programs/program-options/teaching-philosopy/Documents/Traditional-Learning-Centre-Uniform-Requirements.pdf  We know that this has been a tough year on some families financially, and if you need help to meet the uniform requirements, please contact the office to make an appointment with Ms. Lay or myself (Ms. Markovich) and we  will see what we can do to help you out.

2021-2022 Registrations for New Students

As you likely already know, our school typically has more registrations than spaces available and so our school holds a lottery for admission in February of each year. Our TLC lottery took place on February 10th and all families should have been notified either way by now. If you know families who applied and have not yet heard back from us yet, please encourage them to contact the office. Following the lottery, any new registrations received are added to the end of our callback lists.

Celebrations of Learning

Keep an eye on the school calendar on our school website to find out when your child's class will be hosting a virtual Celebration of Learning. These celebrations will be shared with our parents, and the rest of the classes like an assembly that we would typically host in a regular school year. These celebrations will take approximately 15 to 30 minutes and will only stay on our school's private YouTube channel for one week, before being removed. If you have any questions about your child's participation, please contact your child's teacher.

I hope you and your family have a safe and relaxing spring break!
