Literacy

  • Raz-Kids
    • Every student at Edgemont School has a Raz-Kids account. If you need help logging in, please contact your teacher.
    • Digitally delivered leveled books and quizzes makes practicing reading fun with an engaging eLearning environment and built-in motivational rewards.
  • Calgary Public Library
    • Every CBE student and staff member has a free Calgary Public Library account.
    • To login to the websites below, use your CBE email account (ie. studentj4@educbe.ca) as your username (or "library barcode number") and 1234567 as your password. Staff use their CBE email address alias and the password 2222222 to login to the CPL website.
      • BookFlix
        • Animated read-along storybooks and videos for early learners.
      • Libby/OverDrive/eReading Room for Kids
        • eBooks and Audiobooks (for just kids books, please click the eReading Room link)
      • Flipster
        • Read popular magazines online including Kayak, Owl, Brainspace, All About Space, Faces, RangerRick, and Zoobooks.
      • Tumble Book Library
        • Listen and read-along to animated story books for young children, their parents, and teachers. Play games and watch videos from National Geographic.

        • Find full-text eBooks for learners of all ages on topics including coding, business, and travel, as well as DK Eyewitness books about animals, history, geography, weather, technology, and more.

    • Storyline Online - Features celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations.

    • Reach Out & Read - American early literacy organization working directly with pediatric care providers to share the lifelong benefits that result from families reading aloud to their children every day.

    • Listen and read-along to animated math-themed story books for children, their parents, and teachers. Complete quizzes on core math skills after reading the stories.
  • ST Math
    • Award-winning visual instructional program that leverages the brain’s innate spatial-temporal reasoning ability to solve mathematical problems. Developed for elementary and middle school students, ST Math includes more than 35,000 puzzles.     • Daily Dose and Weekly Dose Online Series - Taking you behind the scenes with our animals, humans and conservation programs every day during our temporary closure to keep spirits high, and minds engaged.
    • Zoo Along with You - Your hub for zoo-related activities to help engage your young people and keep their spirits high while in and around your home.

  • Royal Tyrrell Museum
    • RTMP From Home - Videos (each week they add a new behind-the-scenes video featuring one of their staff from the Museum’s Preservation & Research section speaking about a specimen in their collection), Zoom backgrounds, colouring pages, and virtual museum tours with the Royal Tyrrell Museum app. It’s also possible to do a virtual tour of the Museum in Google Maps using street view.

  • Science Reference Center

  • World Book Online for Kids
    • Children can explore the world of animals, important people, and places in easy-to-read articles, images, and videos. You can also solve puzzles while learning fun facts or try out science experiments.

    • More than 141,000 encyclopedia articles on a wide array of topics, educational videos, images, magazine articles, learning games, and more.

  • Code to Learn
    • Free resources to Canadian students and teachers to help them learn coding, robotics, computational thinking, and 21st century skills.
    • Get started with simple activities, resources, and workshops, and find self-directed learning about computational thinking, LYNX, and micro:bits.
    • TakingITGlobal has launched Code to Learn@Home to continue to serve students during COVID-19 closures. In partnership with LCSI, Cisco, Fair Chance Learning, and with support from the Government of Canada, we're offering coding and computational thinking learning experiences for students of all ages.
  • Scratch
    • Programming language and an online community where children can program and share interactive media such as stories, games, and animation with people from all over the world.
    • Project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. It is provided free of charge.

    • Nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to computer science in schools and increasing participation by women and underrepresented youth.

  • Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park (Siksika)
    • A Home For Our History - a non-profit ebook that details the origins and history of the museum and details the importance of Blackfoot Crossing and its place in the world
  • Nitsitapiisinni Stories and Spaces (Kainai)
    • Weaves threads of connection between children, elders, plants, landscapes and the stories that bind them together which provide an opportunity to explore our own connection to the land and one another.

  • Kanopy
    • Movies and TV shows including Franklin, Little Bear, Max & Ruby, and Wapos Bay. 
    • Sign in (using CPL info above). Then create an account using your CBE Google account.
    • For children's tv shows and movies, click "Go to Kanopy Kids" at the top.
  • BrainFuse online tutoring
    • Students studying the Alberta curriculum in Grades 2 to 12 can access online help from 2pm to 11pm daily. Chat live with a tutor and create your own study tools with flashcards and games.
