Advanced Placement

English Language Arts 10 Pre-AP (5 credits)

Prerequisite Recommendation: greater than 80% in Grade 9 ELA

English 10-1 Pre AP is designed to challenge interested and capable students beyond the 10-1 program. Emphasis is placed on applying reading strategies; understanding and applying literary techniques and literary forms; and mastering the research process. Through the close reading of selected texts, students will deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to both provide meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read and create, students will consider a work's structure, style, and themes, as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone.

Generally a continuation of English 10-1 Pre AP, this course emphasizes literary devices, figures of speech, sound techniques, literary techniques, composition and style. Students will move beyond remembering and understanding to applying and analyzing texts and text elements. The compositional focus of the course is the analytic, literary essay in its various forms. As well, students may be asked to study and create short stories, poetry, play scripts, film, graphic essays and stories, and radio dramas.

Prerequisite Recommendation: ELA 20-1 Pre AP or greater than 80% in ELA 20-1 or teacher recommendation

The AP English Literature and Composition course engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Students are expected to write the AP exam in May and the English 30-1 diploma exam at the end of the year.
