Learning a language empowers you to think, act and speak in diverse cultural settings and to move from one cultural setting to another with confidence.

Benefits of Learning Second Languages

Some advantages include:

  • Entrance to programs at the post-secondary level.
  • The 30 level is recognized as equivalent to Math 30 in some programs.
  • Greater employment opportunities and choices.
  • Exploring the world.
  • Fostering friendships among people from all countries.

University Entrance

Second languages are equivalent to Social and Math and can meet the entrance requirements for many universities.

Scholarships

Second languages boost the opportunities for many scholarships offered locally, nationally and internationally.

Exchanges

Second languages provide opportunities for reciprocal exchanges and field trips abroad.

International Certificate 

Second languages constitute a large component of the International Certificate.

Advanced Placement®

Chinese Language and Culture

Chinese Language and Culture 10-6Y (Pre AP), 20-6Y (Pre AP), and 30-6Y (AP) Prerequisites: Chinese Language and Culture Grade 7-6Y, 8-6Y, 9-6Y or teacher approval These courses are designed for students who want to take their current level of Chinese language proficiency to a high intermediate level.  Students must have previous Chinese Language instruction and may write an evaluation exam to determine their current level of Chinese. Teacher approval is also recommended.

Students are immersed in Chinese language and culture to expand their vocabulary, grammar, idiomatic expressions, and cultural information pertaining to Chinese speaking world. As part of the program, students will have the opportunity to participate in the annual Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition, Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), summer field trips to China, and apply for Chinese scholarship. By the end of the courses, students will present, interpret and negotiate meanings through constant communication in Chinese language and be prepared for the Chinese Language and Culture Advanced Placement exam.
