Physical Education 10 (5 credits)

No Prerequisite Required

The aim of the Physical Education program is to enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. By participating in activities in the school and within the community, you will gain experience in a wide variety of activities, explore your physical abilities and improve your fitness level. You will understand that fitness impacts well-being and body image. Communicating with others in and through a variety of activities, you will continue to develop a sense of fair play, citizenship, and exercise your leadership abilities. You will discover the importance and excitement of active living for life; set goals; and challenge yourself to develop the habits of an active, healthy lifestyle.

Note | Physical Education 10 is a required course to graduate with an Alberta High School Diploma.

Physical Education 10 is a compulsory course for Grade 10 students as it is a required course for a High School Diploma.

  • Focuses on the development of an active life style through a wide range of activities 
  • Will include activities such as team and individual games, aquatics, dance, fitness and lifetime activities


Physical Education 20 (5 credits)

Prerequisite Recommendation: Physical Education 10 with 65% +. Marks of 50% to 65% are subject to available space and teacher recommendation.

The aim of the Physical Education program is to enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. In Physical Education 20, you will have the opportunity to participate in activities in the school and within the community; you will gain further experience in a wide variety of activities, explore your physical abilities and improve your fitness level. You will increase your understanding that fitness impacts well-being and body image. Communicating with others in and through a variety of activities, you will continue to develop a sense of fair play, citizenship, and exercise your leadership abilities. You will expand your understanding of the importance and excitement of active living for life; set goals; and challenge yourself to further develop the habits of an active, healthy lifestyle.

The focus of the Physical Education 20 program shifts from the traditional activities to a program that is centered on a series of lifetime activities.  Greater emphasis is placed upon personal choice, personal responsibility and volunteerism (service hours).

  • Extension of the Physical Education 10 program 
  • Lifetime Activities include golf, canoeing, bowling, racquetball, curling 
  • Five service hours required 
  • Students can also take Physical Education 20 (3 credit) /CALM 20 (3 credit) course. 
  • Course Fee:  $50.00


Physical Education 30 (5 credits)

Prerequisite Recommendation: Physical Education 20 with 65%+

The aim of the Physical Education program is to enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to lead an active, healthy lifestyle.In Physical Education 30, you will have the opportunity to participate in activities in the school and within the community; you will gain further experience in a wide variety of activities, explore your physical abilities and improve your fitness level. You will increase your understanding that fitness impacts well-being and body image. Communicating with others in and through a variety of activities, you will continue to develop a sense of fair play, citizenship, and exercise your leadership abilities. You will expand your understanding of and learn to advocate for the importance and excitement of active living for life; set goals; and challenge yourself to further develop the habits of an active, healthy lifestyle.

Note | Physical Education 30 may be used to meet university entrance requirements for specific degree programs at some institutions.

The Physical Education 30 program is a continuation of the Physical Education 20 program with some added activities.

  • Develop programs initiated in Physical Education 20 
  • May include sailing, squash, kayaking, mountain biking, cross country skiing 
  • Five service hours required
