Science 10 Pre-AP (5 credits)

Prerequisite Recommendation: Teacher recommendation and strong academic ambition

Success in this course will lead to: Biology 20/30/35 AP, Chemistry Pre-20AP and/or Physics 20 Pre-AP

Content:  In addition to the Science 10 curriculum, Pre-AP students will be introduced to grade 11 and 12 enrichment.  This includes:

  • Research skills, laboratory skills and inquiry based-learning
  • Chemistry emphasis on the mole, gravimetric stoic, predicting products, and enhanced formulas
  • Biology detailing diffusion and osmosis, plant physiology, mitosis and meiosis
  • Physics enhancing mathematical rigor-significant digits, graphing techniques, vector, unit analysis, and algebra 


Biology 20 Pre-AP / Biology 30AP – Full Year Course (10 credits)

Prerequisite Recommendation: Teacher recommendation and Science 10 pre-AP or Science 10

Success in this course will lead to: university advanced placement or credit may be awarded based on the Biology AP exam mark that is written in May.  This is in addition to the diploma exam in June.  It is recommended for students to take this in grade 11 or 12.

Content: This course revolves around the AP Biology curriculum’s four big ideas: Evolution, Systems, Information and Interactions In addition to the Biology 20/30 curriculum, AP students will gain enrichment in the following topics:

  • Chemistry of Life, The Cell, Metabolism, Evolution, Human Systems, Communication and Signaling, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Ecology, Human Reproduction.
  • Extra inquiry-based laboratory work to enhance analytical and research skills.
  • Research projects, guest speakers, field work and off-campus visits to develop world readiness.

Chemistry 20 Pre-AP (5 credits)

Prerequisite Recommendation: Teacher recommendation and Science 10 pre-AP or Science 10

Success in this course will lead to: Chemistry 30/35AP (full year course) -- as well as a superior chemistry background.

Content: 

  • Acid and Base chemistry, pH and Indicators.
  • Solutions and stoichiometry (gases, solids and aqueous) unit.
  • Gas laws unit (including AP topics relating to gases).
  • Bonding unit (including AP topics of molecular geometry, Lewis Dots, VSEPR theory).
  • Building on organization, research and problem solving skills for laboratory techniques. 


Chemistry 30 / Chemistry 35AP – Full Year Course (8 credits)

Prerequisite Recommendation: Teacher recommendation and Chemistry 20 Pre-AP or Chemistry 20.

Success in this course will lead to: university advanced placement or credit may be awarded based on the Chemistry AP exam mark that is written in May.  This is in addition to the diploma exam in June.  Recommended for students to take in either grade 11 or 12.

Content:  In addition to the Chemistry 30 curriculum, AP students will be enriched through the following topics:

  • Atomic theory and atomic structure, chemical bonding, redox, gas laws, liquid and solids, solutions, reaction types, stoichiometry, equilibrium, kinetics, thermochemisty and thermodynamics. 
  • Strong emphasis on mathematical calculations and laboratory skills will be developed.


Physics 20 Pre-AP (5 credits)

Prerequisite Recommendation:  Teacher recommendation and Science 10 Pre-AP

Success in this course will lead to: Physics 30/35AP (full year course) -- as well as a superior physics background.

Content: 

  • In addition to the Physics 20 curriculum, students will do further enrichment.  Students will be introduced to torque and rotational kinematics.
  • Students will learn formulas and theories to apply to the real world.


Physics 30 / Physics 35AP – Full Year Course (8 credits)

Prerequisite Recommendation:  Teacher recommendation and Physics 20 Pre-AP or Physics 20. Co-requisite Math 20-1.

Success in this course will lead touniversity advanced placement or credit may be awarded based on the Physics AP exam that is written in May.  This is in addition to the diploma exam in January.

Content:  In addition to the Physics 30 curriculum students will have the opportunity to study:

  • Fluid mechanics and thermal physics; torque; rotational statics; rotational dynamics; angular momentum and electric circuits
  • A strong laboratory component is incorporated in this course.
