School Access

The main door of the school is open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. All other doors remain locked during the day so we can monitor who enters our building. If you are picking up your child early, or need access to the school for any reason, please ring the bell and we would be happy to let you in.

We have several school procedures in place to make our school a safe place while also maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for those with valid reasons to be here. Our safety and security procedures are reviewed regularly with staff and students. We require the support of parents for these rules and procedures to be effective.

Visitor and Volunteer Sign-In

We ask all parents, visitors and volunteers to sign in and out of our school at the main office. Visitors and volunteers are also asked to visibly wear the identification tags provided. We know many of your faces and appreciate the number of hours you have donated here.

This process is not designed to inconvenience you. It is designed to inconvenience those without a legitimate reason to be in our school. When a staff member asks, “Have you signed in at the office?” please remember they are doing it out of concern for your child’s safety.

Playground Supervision

Staff members are on outdoor supervision at the following times for students who are not bused to our school:

  • 7:45 am - 8:00 am
  • 12:00 pm – 12:45 pm

Emergency Procedures

The Crisis Plan at Ethel M. Johnson is designed to keep students safe and keep parents informed in the event of an emergency. Crisis Plan procedures are reviewed regularly and follow appropriate school board regulations and provincial or federal legislation. Contact information provided by parents is used to create fan-out lists which would be the main form of communication in the event of an emergency.

Fan-out lists are created for several groups including classrooms, students who access charter bus service and students registered in the lunchroom. In the event of an emergency, school staff would first ensure student safety and then begin the process of contacting parents if necessary.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
