Web Awareness & Internet Safety
All students are provided with Web Awareness instruction and the safe use of electronic resources. At school, students work in a filtered environment where access to internet content is monitored. The school behavior policy makes no distinction between face-to-face and electronic communication. Students are accountable for their behaviour and communication conducted electronically.
Instant Messaging, email and Social Networking sites (Facebook), when used inappropriately, can negatively impact the learning environment at school regardless of where the communication originated. The school discipline policy extends to electronic communication by students when it affects the welfare of individual students or school climate.
Cell Phones & Other Electronics
Students in the 21st century have access to a wider variety of electronic communication and entertainment devices than ever before. We strongly recommend electronic devices are left at home. We permit students to bring items such as cellular phones, MP3 players, and electronic games to school with some provisions. The school will not assume responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen property and school staff will not store those items.
Playing electronic games and listening to music is limited to regular charter bus rides, recess and lunch time. One goal of EMJ School is the development of pro-social skills and we encourage students to not detract from this through the use of these devices.
The initial decision to allow a student to bring devices to school rests with the parent and the school will assume parents have granted permission to students who have those devices at school. Cell phones must be turned off during school hours.
