Building a Bright Future - Minecraft Education Edition

We are excited to share that the Calgary Board of Education has partnered with Microsoft, The City of Calgary and The Calgary Public Library to offer an exciting and engaging Minecraft Design Challenge. This challenge provides students with the opportunity to navigate through a customized virtual representation of downtown Calgary. Through this digital space, students interact with experts as they consider, “How might we reimagine our public spaces to enrich the lives of Calgarians and strengthen our community?". A video introducing the challenge can be viewed here. A student handbook with more detailed information about the challenge can be found here.
For those who are not yet familiar with Minecraft, it is an open-world game that promotes creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in an immersive environment where the only limit is your imagination. Minecraft: Education Edition is different from the regular Minecraft video game. The Education Edition is specifically designed as a learning experience that supports many of the learning outcomes from Alberta's Programs of Study. You can learn more about Minecraft: Education Edition through this video.
All CBE students have access to Minecraft: Education Edition at no cost and are invited to participate in this CBE-wide challenge. Parents wishing to learn more about how Minecraft: Education Edition supports learning may access the Parent Guide.
Students are able to download Minecraft: Education Edition onto personal home devices, at no cost, using the following steps:
1. Go to https://education.minecraft.net/en-us/get-started/download
2. Students sign in using their CBEStudentID@edu.cbe.ab.ca (your child's CBE student ID can be found on a previous report card or by logging into PowerSchool)
3. Download this Minecraft world file. This downloadable world file will connect you to the challenge once import it into Minecraft: Education Edition
We know that many students love Minecraft and we are very excited to bring this learning opportunity to our EMJ community. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher for more information.
