Week 18: (Jan 18 – 22)

In literacy, this week we began learning about different ways to enhance our stories.  First, we learned about word choice and created a personal Thesaurus for each student to keep in their desk.  Next, we began learning about ‘Showing and Not Telling, adding elaborate details to critical characters, settings and objects in our stories.  The grade 3’s also began another story, that we will focus for adding these elements to. For word work we continued looking at different spelling patterns that are used to create the long e vowel sound.

 

In math, this week we continued or work with subtraction.  Each day we learned and practiced different personal strategies to solve subtraction problems.  We learned about using our base ten blocks to build the numbers in the problem, we used ‘breaking apart’ and friendly numbers, stacking the numbers on top of each other and also used an open number line to count on.  On Friday, we used clothesline math again to order differences from 1-20.

 

In, Science this week we continued exploring Rocks and Minerals.  We began talking about how rocks & minerals are used in our home, school and the world.  We are working on google slides to create a slide presentation about where and how we use rocks in our lives.  On Friday, we began an experiment to answer our question ‘How are crystals formed?’  We are leaving our crystals over the week-end to see how they will grow.

 

In gym, this week we focused on our target skills again by exploring curling. We learned how to curl the rocks down the gym floor aiming at the ‘button’ in the middle of the house.  We talked about team work and how each person on your team plays an important role to helping their team be successful.

 

We also worked on a ‘mosaic’ art project, using coloured tiles. 

 

Looking ahead…

1.   We will work on writing our own paragraph using elaborate details.

2.    We will continue learning about the land in Peru.

3.    We will work on solving addition and subtraction word problems.

Week 17: (Jan 11 – 15)

Happy New Year!

In literacy, this week we began our journey through reading response journals. Together we looked at a sample of a response journal and looked at its parts.  Then we read different picture books together and wrote our response to the stories.  We used guiding questions, such as, retell, reflect and relate to help us in our responses.  For word work we began looking at different spelling patterns that are used to create the long e vowel sound. We also starting learning how to communicate our ideas using cursive writing.

 

In math, this week we continued practicing subtraction strategies such as counting on and using fact families.  We also looked at the passage of time, units of measurement and non-standard and standard units.  We used sand timers and pendulums to measure our classmates completing various activities.  We discovered that using non-standard units of measure is not very efficient when measuring time.  We also worked with a clothesline number line this Friday, working to decide how to place the numbers or representations of numbers in the correct place along the line.

 


In, Science this week we continued exploring Rocks and Minerals.  This week we learned about soil and how it is part of the rock cycle.  We observed and compared 2 different soil samples under a microscope. We concluded that the soil samples were from different layers in the earth because one was much harder than the other one.  We also discovered that rocks can be broken down through weathering and erosion.  Then we smashed some rocks to see how rocks can eventually break down into soil.

 

In gym, this week we focused on our running skills.  We completed many different relays, across the gym, across the long part of the gym and finally with batons around the whole gym.  We discovered that holding the baton steady helped us to exchange faster and allowed our team mates to run quicker.

 

Looking ahead…

1.   We will continue our work with story writing, with focus on the middle of our stories.

2.    We will learn about the many uses of Rocks & Minerals.

3.    We will learn about 3-digit subtraction with regrouping and solving word problems.

5. Please start collecting recycled materials, save them for the blue bin.  We will be using them for our next Science Unit.  Items such as, kleenex boxes, toilet paper rolls, round lids to milk jugs, smaller boxes, yogurt containers, newspaper etc.

Week 15: (Dec 9 – Dec 11)

 Happy 2nd last week of School!

Early Morning Check- in!! Each morning we do a quick update on our feelings by placing our 'Ishi' rock on the face that represents how we are feeling.  Monday's we are all usually feeling tired and are in the Blue Zone, first thing in the morning but by Friday we were all in the Green Zone and ready to learn.

In literacy, this week we continued our 1st journey through narrative story writing.  We were introduced to C.O.P.S and we learned how to edit our stories for Capital Letters, Organization, Punctuation and Spelling. Most students were successful or close to, publishing their first narrative story complete with a title page.  For word work we also concluded our study of ‘Bossy R’ words and completed a word sort.  The grade 3’s sorted their words into the different spelling patterns that create the ‘R’ sound.

 In math, this week we continued our focus on addition and subtraction strategies.  We looked a variety of mental math strategies, such as the property of zero, doubles, nearly doubles and using addition to solve subtraction questions. On Friday, we learned about Hanukkah and how dreidels are used as part of Hanukkah celebrations.  We spun dreidels and followed the directions in this game of chance.  We discussed the probability, 1 out of 4, of rolling ‘Gimel’ and getting to collect the whole pile of gold coins.

 

In, Science this week we continued exploring Rocks and Minerals.  This week we learning about how geologists sort rocks into 3 different types Metamorphic, Sedimentary and Igneous. These are based on how each rock is formed.  Then we described 2 rocks from our rock collections based on their properties, texture, size, color, lusture and presence of carbonates.

 

We combined our art skills with our study of India and learned about one of India’s most famous landmarks, the Taj Mahal.  We used ‘Miras’ and drew one half of the famous building that is known for its’ beauty and symmetry'.  We then painted in the background blue.

 

In gym, this week we continued our skipping unit.  We learning how to work in a group using the long ropes and how to turn the ropes of our classmates to skip.  We also used ‘jump bands’ and played a great game of Frozen Critters outside on Friday.  We used our knowledge of how animals survive using shelter, food and how some animals are the prey (mice) and some are the predators (foxes).

 

Looking ahead…

1.   We will learn about another genre of writing, Friendly letters.

2.    We will learn about the hardness test for Rocks & Minerals.

3.    We will learn a variety of math games to practice our basic facts.

Week 14: (Nov 30 – Dec 3)

Happy beautiful weather week of School!

In literacy, this week we continued our journey through narrative story writing.  Our focus this week was ‘I can change a boring beginning into an entertaining beginning’ and ‘I can use the writing process to complete my story’.  We looked at using action and sound effects to make our story beginnings more entertaining and practiced a couple together.  We also began looking at the different stages of the Writing process and used the Smart Board to more our images around as we moved through the stages.  This week we focused on another Reading Power, Visualizing.  We read several books that modeled the use of description and practiced making pictures in our mind and we read.

 

In math, this week we continued looking at addition.  We practiced adding 3- digit numbers using a variety of strategies.  We also began using our beaded number lines to help us see and practice many different addition strategies.

 

In, Science this week we continued exploring Rocks and Minerals.  This week we made a model of the earth’s components to illustrate and explain where rocks are made.  We also got to use our rock kits for the first time, sorting the rocks based on their similarities and differences.

 

In gym, this week we began our skipping unit.  We practiced jumping different ways and then added in the skipping rope.  We have been learning many tricks, the boxer skip, the bell, the runner skip, the skier and cross overs.

Looking ahead…

1.   We will learn some editing techniques to edit our stories.

Week 13: (Nov 23 – 27)

Happy thirteenth week of School!

 In literacy, this week we began our journey into Narrative writing.  We started with talking about the different purposes for writing and how narrative writing is about entertaining the reader.  Next, we brainstormed different characters, settings and problems.  Then we planned out our stories on a story map.  We learned that writing a story is like a diamond shape and that we need to include an ‘entertaining beginning’ to hook our readers. Our focus this week was on ‘magic e’ words that change the vowel sound into its long sound.  We completed our first word sort, looking carefully at all the ‘magic e’ words and putting them in the correct group.


In math, this week we began with counting money in a bag.  We learned the value of each coin and how to use our skip counting skills to find the value of each coin.  Then we started using our addition skills to find the total value of coins in the bag.  We also began our journal through addition and subtraction.  We created a ‘Frayer model’ to explain what addition is and isn’t.  We also reviewed adding 2-digit numbers together.

 

In, Science this week we began our new unit, Rocks and Minerals.  We have been bringing in our rock collections from home and examining these rocks under our document camera.  Our homework this weekend is to find a special rock we could bring to school to be our ‘ishi’ rock, to keep us company when we are sad or worried.  We also learned about ‘Mehndi’ body art that uses henna as part of our study of Indian culture.  We created our own Mehndi art using curved lines and nature inspired patterns.

 In Health, we began exploring the parts of our brain that control our thoughts.  We also learned that that there are skills we can do called mindfulness to help us to keep our amygdala in check. In gym, this week we concluded our unit on badminton and had a dance party in the gym on Friday.

 

Looking ahead…

1.   We will continue our journey into narrative (story) writing.

2.    We will build models of our Earth in plasticine.

3.    We will work on strategies to add 3-digit numbers.

Week 12: (Nov 16 - 19)

Happy Interview Week of School!

 In literacy and Science, this week we combined our skills and knowledge to create an animal with paragraphs about the facts we researched.  The grade threes worked hard writing and editing 3 paragraphs about their animal. They also included pictures of the animal’s lifecycle as well as a diagram of their animal’s physical features and adaptations.  Look for their finished report to come home soon!!

In math, this week we concluded our study of patterns by comparing them.  The grade 3’s worked in partners building and comparing patterns. They worked together to discover how their patterns were alike or different.  During our morning mental math, we learned a new math routine, Imposter sets.  The students looked at 4 different numbers and compared them to find the Imposter, the number that didn’t match.

In, Social Studies this week we began our flight around the world discover about other countries and compare them to country.  Our I Can statement is ‘I can Connect to the world around me.’ Our first stop is India, we learned that India is in the continent of Asia, we coloured India’s flag and read how the caste system was an old way the Indian people used to organize their society.

 

In Health, we have been learning about the Zones of Regulation. How to control and regulate our emotions to be ready to learn.  This week we talked about strategies to control our emotions and use ‘Our Inner Ninja skills’. The students set a goal to control their emotions and how they could earn their own Ninja Band.

 

Looking ahead…

1.   We will learn begin to look at narrative (story) writing

Week 11: (Nov 9 - 13)

 Happy Remembrance Week of School!

 In literacy, this week we wrote an acrostic poem about Remembrance Day.  We brainstormed a word bank as a class of words that we could use to write about Remembrance Day.  We focused on using descriptive words and writing complete sentences.  In word work, this work we began learning about Diphthongs.  Diphthongs are words that have 2 vowels that when they are beside each other in words create a new sound.  For example, oi or oy.  The grade 3’s are becoming wonderful word detectives, searching for these vowel patterns in words that they read.  We also read with a Buddy this Friday to share and discover how our classmates read.


In math, this week we learnt how to extend our increasing and decreasing patterns and how to use T-tables to find the pattern rule. We read a book called ‘Two of Everything’ and learn that when two objects were placed into a magic pot then 2 came out.  We created and practiced using T-tables.

 

In, Social Studies this week we built passports to prepare for our flights around the world to discover new cultures and countries.  Our first stop was India and on Friday we learned about a celebration that people from India celebrate, Diwali.  We create Rangoli art using color salt and glue.  Rangoli art is a symbol of welcome and light that home owners build outside their houses on the first day of Diwali.


 

In gym, this Friday we enjoyed the snow outside.  We played a fun tag game in the trees and then played soccer or built a snow tower in the snow.

1.   We will learn how to sort shapes using one attribute

Week 10: (Nov 2 - 6)

Happy 10th Week of School!

In literacy, this week we continued our work with paragraph writing. We continued our focus on I can expand my ideas and indent my paragraphs. This week we took our research notes we discovered about Bats and wrote those ‘jot’ notes into complete sentences and then into a paragraph on a main topic.  The grade 3’s did a wonderful job adding interesting sentence starters that hooked their reader. As well as topic sentences introducing their topics, bat habitats, bat life cycles or bat food.  As well, we have read several books and discussed the importance on Remembrance Day.  The grade 3’s made their own poppies and will wear them next Monday and Tuesday at school.

In math, this week we continued our learning with patterns.  We learned about increasing and decreasing patterns.  We created them and described them using a pattern rule. We discovered that the pattern rule must be consistent and repeat in order to make it a pattern.  We also learned about our ‘Function Machine’ and looked at patterns in numbers.

 

In health, this week we introduced to our newest classmate, NINJA BOB!  Ninja BOB helped to explain to the grade 3’s that we all have different feelings and emotions.  He also helped us put those emotions into different zones, The Green Zone, The Blue Zone, The Red Zone and the Yellow Zone. He then explained that we are all aiming to ‘regulate’ our feelings throughout the day and stay in The Green Zone like a NINJA.

 

In gym, this week we had a wonderful time playing soccer outside.  We practiced shooting, passing, dribbling and how to work as a team.  We got to play two little mini games of 3 on 3.  Room 6 did a great job making sure everyone worked as a team and cooperated together.

 

A special thank-you to the parent council for their donation of money to keep our classroom library growing.  Thanks for the wonderful books, we are loving them!!!

1.   We will learn to extent and compare  increasing/ decreasing patterns in numbers

Week 9: (Oct 26 - Oct 29) 

Happy National Bat Week! 

In literacywe continued our work with paragraph writing. Our focus was I can expand my ideas and indent my paragraphs. The grade 3’s took with ideas from hamburger graphic organizer’ and wrote them in their journals, expanding their ideas using examples.  We also learned how to indent our paragraphs.  

 

Wonderful job again on your READO’s, we hamany other students complete it and claim  We created our second READO 2.0 and some students brought those home this week.

In math, this week we completed a pumpkin investigation.  Our big question was ‘Which pumpkin has the most seeds?’  First, we estimated how many seeds were in each pumpkin, the small, medium and large pumpkin.  Next, we cut open the pumpkins and pulled out all the slimy guts and seeds and adjusted our estimates after getting the seeds out of the pumpkin. Then we counted our pumpkin seeds either by 5’s or 10’s to find the actual amount of seeds and discovered that the large pumpkin had the most seeds, 375.  On Thursday we drew our fist bar graph and wrote some reflections about our learning.  We drew names to see who got to bring home the pumpkins to carve. Room 6 did an amazing job working in a group and completing this investigation. 


In Science, this week we continued looking closely at animal lifecycles. Our focus this week was on the only mammal that can fly, BATS.  The students took great interest in learning about BATS, they have been researching facts about BATS in books, online books and videos.  We have also been learning about non-fiction texts and the different components that make up those types of books. 


In gym, this week we had lots of fun with Halloween stations.  Running and jumping over tombstones, bowling down ghosts, ring toss on a witch’s hat and keeping ghost balloons in the air. 

 

Looking ahead… 

1. We will continue with growing/ increasing patterns using our pumpkin seeds.

2.We will write a paragraph about BATS!

3. We will learn about the adaptations Bat's have to survive

Week 8: (Oct 19 - Oct 23)

 Happy Snowy Week!

In literacy, this week we began our work with paragraph writing. Our focus is ‘I can draft my ideas into short paragraphs, with topic and supporting sentences’. After learning about what makes a paragraph we worked in partners, looking at paragraphs and identifying the 3 main parts. We then used a ‘hamburger graphic organizer’ to organize our ideas.

 

Wonderful job on the READO this week, we already had one student complete it and claimed his prize. Congratulations, and keep on reading!!

In math, this week we began our study on patterning. The grade 3’s reviewed their learning from grade two by creating and describing repeating patterns. We talked about two key vocabulary terms, the CORE of a pattern and the TERM of a pattern. The students created their own repeating patterns after reading a book called ‘Pattern Fish’ and described their pattern using AB, ABC, ABB etc.

 

We even made pattern's with our lunches.  Great job making those connections grade 3's

Our school had purchased a license for the online program, Mathletics, again this year. The grade 3’s in room 6 brought home their user name and password for at home access this Friday.

In Science, this week we looked closely at animal lifecycles. We talked about what a life cycle is and drew an example in our visual journals. We then began to take a closer look at the life cycles of an animal from each animal categories.  We began with an investigation of the insects group, focusing on ants.  We learned how ant’s food and appearance changes as it moves through different stages of its lifecycle.  We learned about how ants make their homes and care for their young by reading 'non-fiction' books on Epic books!

 

In gym, this week we worked we concluded our target unit on bowling. We learned some fun games that we used to practice our bowling skills. ‘Don’t throw your garbage in my backyard’ and ‘Bowl-a-ramma’.  We also got outside to celebrate ‘Take Me Outside Day’ and discovered the interesting opportunities playing in the snow can bring.

 

**** Halloween Activities – students will be allowed to wear their costumes to school on Thursday, October 29th. Please keep weapons at home and students should be able to wear their cloth masks with their costumes.

Week 7: (Oct 13 - Oct 16)

 Happy Short Week!

 In literacy, this week we focused on 2 main outcomes.  ‘I can edit for complete and incomplete sentences’ and ‘I can write stories based on personal experiences’.  We read a story called ‘Super Sentence Girl’ and created a chart to show what Super Sentences need.  We then editing sentences gone wrong to make them ‘SUPER’.  On Thursday, we reviewed writing small moments and began thinking of our ideas, touch and telling the important moments and then sketching our ideas across the page.  We began our writing on Friday about our small moments.

 Also, this week we started on our first home literacy program.  This year the students and I created a READO bingo sheet, that came home in their backpacks on Thursday night.  Please initial as your child completes a section of the bingo card, when the bingo sheet is completed, they can return it to the school for a prize.  Thank-for your support!

In mental math, this week we worked on some subitizing.  Subitizing is the ability to instantly recognize “how many” in a small set, like looking at a dice and know what numbers are on it, without counting.  The grade 3’s did a wonderful and creative job explaining in 4 different ways, how they subitized the images of dots.


In Social Studies, this week we went on our first ‘TREKKING TUESDAYS’ and explored our community field.  We used the location of the sun to figure out our cardinal directions and observed the buildings and nature items we discovered along our adventure.  We used our directional skills to create our own simple map of our community.  We added our compass rose and a legend.

 



In gym, this week we worked on a target game, bowling.  We learned how to ‘step, rock and roll/bowl’, rolling the ball on the ground towards a target.  We worked in partners knocking down and setting up our 5 bowling pins at the EMJ bowling alley.

 


****The grade 3’s will be completing the SLA’s (Student Learning Assessments) on the computer next week and they will need headphones, please send them in a ziplock bag for Tuesday, October 20th ******

Week 6 – (Oct 5- Oct 8)

 Happy Thanks-Giving Week!

 In literacy, this week we worked very hard on our writing.  We read a book called ‘twas the night before Thanksgiving’, which is a story about children saving turkeys from a farmer.  We brainstormed and worked with a partner to create a disguise or a costume to save the turkey.  Our writing task was to describe using details how we would create a disguise for our turkey.  We focused on using transition words such as, first, next, then and finally to improve our sentences.


In math, this week we continued working on skip counting.  This week we worked on ‘I can skip count by 3’s and 4s’.  We used a one hundred’s chart to count by 3’s and 4’s and discussed all the patterns we observed.  On Wednesday, we used nature to count by 4’s and grouped leaves into groups of 4’s and practiced our counting skills.

 


In Science, this week we started out first unit, Animal Life cycles.  The grade 3’s worked in their visual journal and on the computers sorting and classifying animals based on their characteristics.  Then, we learned about the groups Zoologists use to classify animals, including mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects and anthropoids.

 

In gym, this week we started working on our soccer skills, dribbling and passing in our soccer field outside. We have also been enjoying reading our books outside in our ‘sit spots’.

 

Beginning next Tuesday, we will be completing our Community Adventures (Walks).  We will call them our ‘TREKKING TUESDAYS’ and we will explore the natural environments around our school and community.  Please remember to dress for the weather.

Week 5 – (Sept 28- Oct 2)

Orange Shirt Day Week!

 In literacy, this week we completed various writing assignments with a focus on using super sentences and descriptive words.  We spent the day on Wednesday talking about Orange Shirt Day and the importance of reconciliation with Indigenous People and understanding the hardships Indigenous children faced in residential schools. The grade 3’s had a great discussion about why we wear Orange Shirts on September 30th and wrote about it in their journals.

 

In math, this week we began our work on ‘I can skip count forward and backward by 5’s, 10’s, 25’s and 100’s.  We practiced together verbally and then worked with 100 charts to find in the different patterns that emerge when skip counting.  We concluded our week with the October calendar and answering different questions to help us understand how we keep track of time using months, dates and days of the week.

 


We also spend some time with leaf rubbings this week.  Creating beautiful art work with warm and cool colors to brighten up our school hallway.

Week 4 – (Sept 21-24)

 Happy Terry Fox Week!

The focus for this past week in room 6 was Terry Fox and the 40th Anniversary of his Marathon of Hope!  The students were very excited to complete a total of 107 laps as a class on our Terry Fox Run on Wednesday this week.

 

In literacy, this week we wrote about Terry Fox using the 4 W’s, who, where, what and why.  Then we learned about making Super Sentences and how we need to make sure our sentences have nouns and adjectives to enhance our writing.  We finished our week writing 3 Super Sentences about ‘Running with Terry’ and created a bulletin board for our classroom.


 In math, this week we worked on ‘I can order and compare numbers to 1000’. This week we used numbers from Terry Fox’s life to represent in different ways, as well as comparing using greater then, less then and equal too.  On Thursday, this week we used some dice kits to roll and create 2 three digit numbers and then compared them in our journals.  We continued with our M&M time in the mornings and this week we worked with math mash ups and used problem solving strategies to solve for the value of ?

New this week was our first set of Library books.  This year the students made a wish list of their favorite books and Ms. B brought a collection to our classroom.  Each student was able to choose 2 library books to read here at school or to take home.

Week 3 – (Sept 14-18)

Happy Third week of school!!

We complete our first full week of classes.  Room 6 had lots of tired students this week.  Please remember to get to bed early and get plenty of sleep.  Also the weather is getting cooler, please remember to dress for the weather so we can go outside to our outdoor learning space.  Don't forget, our Terry Fox Run is on Wednesday, wear your EMJ shirt and those running shoes!!

In literacy, this week we completed two writing projects.  First, we worked on a writing sample about our treasures.  The grade 3’s come up with a list ‘I can statements’ about what good writers do.  Later in the week we worked on writing about imaginary pets.  The students were very excited and engaged with writing about what their pet would be, what it would do, what it would eat and finally what a problem with the pet could be.

 

In math, this week we worked on ‘I can represent numbers in different ways’. We learned about writing numbers using number words, using standard form (digits), pictures and expanded form.  At the end of the week we used objects from nature to create a 3-digit number and then used all the different ways to represent that number.  We also continued our work increasing our problem solving and mental math skills.  This week we worked on solving mobile problems, looking for the missing values.


 

In Social Studies and Art, we are looking began exploring the questions ‘How do Oral Stories show the importance of animals to Indigenous culture?’. First, we looked at the bear and the different stories that Indigenous people told about Bears and what Bears represent.

 

In Gym, this week we have learned various playground games to play while we are out for recess and lunch. We learned the rules of Tether ball, 4 square and target games using the compound markers.

Week 1&2 – (Sept 1-11)                        Happy first weeks of school!!

 It has been such a pleasure getting to know all the students in room 6 and I’m looking forward to a wonderful year of learning adventures!!!

 In literacy, we began a discussion about what quiet reading looks like and sounds like.  We practiced STAMIA and worked on reading for 15 min without breaking our STAMINA.  The students chose 5 books from their own designated baskets and 4 books from their reading levels to keep in their book boxes.  We also talked about our ‘brain pockets’ and where our brain stores ideas for our writing. There are 3 pockets, the Memory pocket, the Fact pocket and the Imagination pocket. We will keep our ‘brain pockets’ in our writing folders to help us get ideas for our writing throughout the year.

In math, we began the year with a quick review of place value from grade 2. We talked about how digits have different values depending on where they are placed. We practiced reading and saying numbers from 100-1000 and made some ‘math kits’ to keep in our desk to use throughout the year with math games we have learned. We also began our daily ‘M& M time’, which stands for mental math. This week we learned about the ‘Today’s Number’ routine and the students brainstormed everything they knew about the number 12.

 In art, we worked on various projects over the past 2 weeks such as our nature name art, our visual journal covers and our writing journal covers. As well as our first journaling lessons outside exploring our ‘outdoor learning space’.

2.   We will begin work on a school wide writing sample about our treasures
