Sept. 15th Update

Schools are remarkable places and so too are the children we have the privilege of serving. We are mid-way through September and in spite of all the things that are “different” about our start up this year, one thing remains the same, our students at Evergreen School are amazing.  We have welcomed 313 students into our learning community for the 2020-21 school year.  As I travel from class to class, I observe the energy and enthusiasm your children bring into our school.  Their spontaneity, resilience and joy for learning and life are contagious and are a constant reminder of why we love what we do. My LOL (laugh out loud) moment came last week while supervising lunch in grade 1.  One of the grade 1 students looked at my lanyard with my identification tag and picture and asked “Is this what you used to look like?”  The picture is about 5 years old, so I wasn’t too wounded by the question, but yes, that was what I used to look like.

Staffing
We communicated last week to the parents with students in room 82 and room 51 regarding some evolving staffing situations that directly affected these classrooms.  We thought it important to summarize our staffing as it stands today for our entire community.
As referenced above we have 313 students registered at Evergreen.  Included in this number are 40 students that opted for the HUB on-line learning environment instead in of face-to-face instruction.  Each school is responsible to designate current staff to be HUB teachers to support these students in the HUB.  At Evergreen, Mrs. Maronese volunteered to be the HUB 1 teacher housed at Evergreen.  Also, the CBE placed Ms. Whitney Andrews at Evergreen to be a HUB 3 teacher.  At Evergreen, HUB classrooms are made up of students from a variety of Area 6 schools.
All CBE schools are experiencing adjustments to their staff due to HUB teachers being identified and moving to the on-line environment.  Many of these schools have had to collapse classes to meet the necessary staffing requirements.  At Evergreen, we have prioritized maintaining our class sizes as much as possible.  To that end, we had to look at how to best utilize some of the external classroom supports differently.  We are all being asked to work in new ways and we believe our solution will allow us to maintain our current configurations and groupings throughout the building.
We have moved Mrs. MacDonald from her literacy/ELL position at Evergreen and into grade 1 in room 82 assuming the teaching responsibilities for the mornings.  In the afternoons, we welcomed Mrs. Bridle into room 82.  Mrs. Bridle continues to teach AM kindergarten at Evergreen but adjusted her hours to include the afternoons in grade 1.
In addition, our Assistant Principal, Ms. Broomfield joined Mrs. Engelking as a teacher in room 51 effective September 14th.  Ms. Broomfield is thrilled to join the grade 2 team and especially excited to have her own group of learners to work with each afternoon.  Mrs. Engelking will continue to be the literacy teacher in the mornings.
We are very fortunate to be able to avoid collapsing classes at this stage and to maintain smaller class sizes for our students.   We wish to thank all our staff for being flexible and prioritizing the needs of students as we endeavor to support all learners that attend Evergreen both physically and virtually.

Conferences
As teachers continue to get to know their students, we wanted to remind you that conferences are scheduled for Thursday, September 24 from 4:30 to 8:00 PM and Friday, September 25 from 8:00 AM to Noon.  As we are not able yet to invite families into the schools, we will have to be creative in facilitating these important initial learning conversations. We are working with the CBE to employ one of the platforms approved for conferences (Skype for Business/Microsoft Teams).    More information will be coming this week, but we wanted you to make note of the dates.
Conferences will be booked in the traditional way.  You will be able to log in to your MyCBE/PowerSchool account to book your interviews beginning Thursday, September 17 at 10AM.  Please refer to the help guide at https://www.cbe.ab.ca/news-centre/Pages/reminder-sign-up-for-mycbe-powerschool.aspx if you need assistance setting up your account, or call us at the school.
We want to learn more about each of our students from you, their families, and begin to set some learning targets and goals.
Please note that at this time, we are not setting up Conferences with students enrolled in Hub Learning.  These conversations will be coming later in the term.

Wellness Update
Thanks to all for continuing to utilize the daily checklist for COVID-19.  We know students will feel unwell from time to time and we sincerely appreciate the efforts our parents have made to keep their child home when ill or to collect them from school if symptoms occur.
Our students have been doing a great job adjusting to masks and distancing whenever possible.  Students wash and sanitize their hands regularly.  We continue to have enhanced cleaning in our classrooms and at lunch and snack.  We have taken measures to limit movement and traffic in hallways.  As always, your support in reinforcing these safety measures with our students is greatly appreciated.

Picture Day
Picture Day is coming Thursday, September 24th at Evergreen School.  While Picture Day may look different this year, the safety of the children remains a priority. Lifetouch has implemented comprehensive Picture Day safety protocols.  After Picture Day, order pictures on mylifetouch.ca using your Portrait ID and Access Code which can be found on your Picture Day order form.
We are also extending the invitation to our HUB students to participate in Picture Day.  HUB students would be accommodated between 1:30-2:30. Please note, due to our current restrictions we are only permitted to allow students into the building.  Parents must wait outside for their child on Photo Day.

As always we value your feedback and support.
