Throughout the year our teachers and staff will offer our students the opportunity to participate in a variety of clubs. Our goal is to offer a wide selection of clubs ranging from maker activities, athletics, technology, fine arts, academics as well looking at areas of student personal interest. Our teachers also try their best to balance clubs offered to students in all grades. Some of our regular clubs include choir, Fish Creek Idol, and Floor Hockey. Most clubs are selected and offered on a year-to-year basis. If your child has an idea for a club, please encourage them to approach their classroom teacher to discuss.

Student Leadership

At Fish Creek School, we encourage all of our students to be leaders in their own way. In recent years, we have offered a Leadership Club to many of our senior students and this club has taken on a significant fundraising outreach program. Most recently, our senior Leadership Club supported a fundraising drive for the charity Sole Hope, where they made shoes from milk carton and old jeans. On a day-to-day basis, our Leadership Club assists the school in “Blue Day” Supervision, refereeing soccer games for younger students, and our Audio/Video Club for assembly set-up, operation and take-down.

Green Club

In a large school, stewardship for environmental responsibility is extremely important. Formed during the 2016/2017 school year, our Green Club members helped to transform the way we work and live in our school environment.

The Green Club began by ensuring that each classroom had the necessary recycle bins to reduce waste and supplemented this with classroom presentations so that students knew which items were acceptable for our recycle bins. But this group didn’t stop there. Once we were effectively recycling, they moved on to compost in advance of the City of Calgary mandated Green Cart program beginning in mid 2017. The Club ensured that each of our classrooms and washrooms (did you know an uneven bulk of school waste in the past has been compostable hand towels from washrooms?) had compost bins. Again, the Green Club took the time to inform each class of the reason and impact for composting, and what could be put in the compost bins.

At the end of the first year, the Green Club, along with the support of our students and teachers, had helped Fish Creek School reduce landfill waste by 37% below the Calgary Board of Education average! We were able to move from weekly garbage pickup to every second week, and may even soon be able to move to monthly pickup.

Our Green Club successes were recognized at the 2017 Mayor’s Environment Expo where Mayor Nenshi spent time with our students learning about their initiatives. We are very proud of the work our Green Club does, and look forward to making a greater impact in both awareness and action in the years to come.

We recognize the importance of extending peer relationships beyond the classroom and grade level. Our younger students look up to our older students, and our older students love being able to mentor their younger friends.

At the outset of each school year, each of our classrooms selects a buddy classroom to connect with throughout the year. Many of our buddy classrooms meet weekly for activities as simple as shared reading to as extensive as a collaborative problem-solving opportunity. Throughout the year, ask your child about their work with their buddy class, and I bet you will see their eyes light up. Very few topics bring on as much enthusiasm as the chance to talk about work with their little or big buddies.

In addition to our class to class buddies, Fish Creek School maintains a strong connection to Mid-Sun Junior High. Many of their leadership students visit Fish Creek School on a regular basis to serve as buddies to their elementary school friends. Their expertise and time spent working in areas of literacy help to make a significant impact on the lives of many of our Fish Creek Students.
