We strive to provide a safe, welcoming, and caring school for all students. We remain particularly committed to providing a quality education for students with exceptional learning needs. The second round of IPPs will be handed to students on Friday, December 6th for your review and signature. Please return the signed copy to the main office. 

In May of this year, Science Daily published an article from King's College London about the great Leonardo da Vinci, suggesting that if he were alive today he would be diagnosed with ADHD. For the full article, please see: Science Daily. 

If a student is struggling with inattention, we invite them to talk to their teachers about it, or to come seek help with strategies in the Resource Room (203). A pediatrician or family doctor is often a helpful resource as well.

We continue to have the privilege of serving and supporting your students with their academic and wellness needs. We are supported by more than 30 outside agencies that partner with us to assist students and their families. While student attendance and achievement is available for parents to access via MyCBE /  PowerSchool, we are happy to meet with you and your student to discuss academic pathways and course planning in person.

We are available from 8:30 AM until 3:30 PM Monday through Thursday and from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM on Friday.  If you are unable to see us in office hours, make an appointment with a staff member. 

Forest Lawn High School is committed to supporting you as you begin your journey through to graduation.  In Students Services you have access to many helping professionals including, Guidance Counsellors, International and English Language Learner Counsellor, and an All in For Youth Success Coach. Their goal is to help you plan for learning, investigate possible career opportunities, and organize for a healthy transition into life beyond high school. You also have access to other professionals such as an Aboriginal Grad Coach, Literacy Strategist, and Resource Teachers who are eager to help personalize your learning, provide accommodations and build strategies that enable you to find academic success.

ELL, LEAD

All coded ELL students will have an Alberta Benchmark Level on their upcoming report card. This year, students will receive an overall benchmark level. Next year, students will receive a benchmark for each of the four strands: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking as well as an overall benchmark. The purpose of the benchmark evaluations is to assess

Fall

Our fall has continued to be busy with many activities happening in our English Language Learning classrooms. We have continued to welcome new students into all program classes – a reflection that immigration to Calgary occurs on a continuous basis throughout the school year.

LEAD Program and Tim Horton Camp

The LEAD class – students and teachers – had a wonderful camp experience at the beginning of October in the Kananaskis. New experiences, new friends and improved confidence and language skills were highlights!

ELL Parent-Teacher Conferences

On October 24 and 25, we welcomed many parents, students and interpreters to participate in parent-teacher interviews. The teachers are appreciative of these kinds of opportunities to talk to parents in person about their children’s progress. It is always a meaningful experience. If you were not able to attend these sessions, please know that you can contact the school to arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher.

ELL Grade 12 Information Night

On October 29, we were able to present information related to school finishing and opportunities that ELL Grade 12 students can pursue once they leave FLHS. We had an excellent turn-out of almost 60 attendees (parents and students). We also had interpreters, representatives from various campuses (BVC, Columbia College, ABES) as well as some our regular family support workers from Calgary Bridge Foundation and CCIS.

The feedback from all attendees was very positive. It seemed that having all stake-holder groups together helped to make students and their families feel both safe and optimistic about making plans for the future. Making plans for life ‘after high school’ can be both exciting and a little scary, too. However, we are helping to make sure that our ELL families know that there is support and information available at Forest Lawn and many community learning centers to help them make the best decisions possible.

e-Learn

FLHS provides a teacher during designated blocks to help you complete courses online. Please see a counsellor in the Student Services to enroll or inquire about this option.

Student Services is the hub of the school. We connect students with courses, resources and offer academic, emotional and social support. Although you need to check in at the main office first we are located at the top of the ramp. Follow the ramp all the way up to the top of the school.  Our office door is the first door on the right in the hallway.
