The Leadership program encourages key elements of servant leadership through peer and mentorship learning opportunities. Students will be given opportunities and encouragement to develop their own leadership skills, take risks, and grow in positive/productive ways. Leadership 10, 20, and 30 are courses that will be of great interest for students who are passionate about making a difference within their leadership class, school and greater community.

Leadership 10 - 5 credits

This program is designed to allow students to develop their personal leadership style within the framework of a number of applicable CTS courses. This course is very much student driven; students will have the time and freedom to explore their interests and passions, and will choose an area of the school, the community, or the wider world in which to create lasting positive change. All students in the leadership program will be involved in putting on many key activities in the school. These include: lunchtime activities, pep rallies, staff and student recognition, service projects and other student-driven initiatives. This course will also explore different styles of leadership, and how famous leaders have modeled them.

Leadership 20/30 - 5 credits each

The leadership 20/30 program is designed to provide students an opportunity to develop their personal leadership style within the framework of a number of applicable higher-level CTS courses. The program is largely student driven and rooted in experiential learning. Over the course of the year, students are presented with opportunities to develop their own leadership skills and build positive relationships with their local and global communities.

What Is Leadership?

In leadership, we do all sorts of activities from reading to kids, to organizing and planning events, to assisting other classes. You will be happy to hear that there is not a single day in leadership that isn't without variety. We strive to help better our school and community. 

We understand that there are many types of ways that you can be a leader, and through our classes we hope to explore which one you are! If you understand yourself, you understand in which ways you can learn and help our community, and community is a significant part of leadership. Leadership is a fun class in which everyone is friends with one another. It is our understanding of community that brings us closer to reaching our common goals, as well as assist each other when facing obstacles.

Course Description

Modules Offered

Students in each grade will complete five modules per year, each worth 1 credit. A certain amount of ‘mixing and matching’ will be required for students at the grades 11 and 12, to ensure that pre-requisites are in order. Completion of all five modules in each year is required in order to progress to leadership in the following year.

Assessment

All HSS coded modules and CCS 3080 will be evaluated as follows:

• 30% Leadership Portfolio contributions and reflections

• 50% Class assignments and participation

• 20% Project for the module


CCS 1910, 2910, and 2920 are “Project” modules. Students will be choosing, planning, completing and reflecting on a major project within the school, community, or globally. Their mark will reflect their planning, execution of, and reflection upon the project. CCS 1080 and 2080 are “volunteering” modules. Students will complete a small amount of preparatory course work, and then choose people, places, and organizations in which to volunteer. Students will complete a minimum of 20 volunteer hours.

Required Materials

Please come to class prepared. This includes bringing a pen and pencil, eraser, binder and paper, and any other materials that you need for your current project, to class each day. Great ideas, a willingness to work hard, and a positive attitude are also required.

Lates and Absences

Attendance and participation are essential to this course. Please speak to Mr. Paris as far in advance of any absences as possible and do your very best to be on time. Occasional time outside of class (focus time, lunch time, before or after school) will also be required depending on the projects that you choose to involve yourself in. 

Student Expectations

Leadership students are expected to take on a special role within Forest Lawn High School. As a part of the Leadership team you are an ambassador for our school, and are expected to keep this in mind at all times. This means that we ‘live leadership’ by participating in and supporting initiatives whenever possible, and by actively working to make Forest Lawn High School an inclusive, welcoming, fun, and inspiring place to be. Students whose behavior does not meet the above criteria will meet with Mr. Paris to discuss their behavior and future within the leadership program.
