Who Was Guy Weadick?
The school is named after Guy Weadick, a flamboyant character in Calgary's history. Guy Weadick was born in Rochester, New York in 1885. He came west when he was only 13, filled with dreams of becoming a cowboy. He learned to rope and ride a horse in California, trick roping was his specialty. He performed in several Wild West shows in North America and Europe. In 1908, while visiting Calgary, he met with H.C. McMullen and proposed to him the idea of an annual Frontier Day celebration for the city. On Labour Day, Sept. 2, 1912, the opening day of the first Calgary Stampede was finally staged. Sixty thousand people watched the history of the west on parade. The Calgary Exhibition & Stampede was born, thanks to Guy Weadick.
