HMS September 18 Update

Hello HMS Families!
It has been another terrific week of in-person learning at Haultain Memorial. With the news that some schools have experienced cases of COVID-19 in their buildings, we are so appreciative of the caution our parents and staff are exercising to keep everyone safe. Our students have been very flexible and resilient over the first few weeks when they have had a substitute teacher. This is so important as the school year unfolds and staff members may need to stay home more often, even with mild cold symptoms or other illness. We are fortunate to have a few substitutes who are familiar with our school, students, and routines and who have agreed to come to our school again this year when they are needed. Our teachers have created sub folders and plans to ensure that substitutes have all of the information they need if a teacher has to be away to maintain continuity and familiarity for our students.
Meet the Teacher Conferences (for students who are learning in-person at HMS): Online Booking for Meet the Teacher Conferences will open up at 5 PM today, Friday Sept. 18. If you have any difficulty with booking online through your Powerschool/ MyCBE Account, please call the office 403-777-6860 (ext. 0) Teachers will be conducting their meetings by phone call. For more detailed information about our upcoming Meet the Teacher on Sept. 24 and 25, click here.
Terry Fox Run: We will be participating in the Terry Fox Run in a modified way this year. With the current restrictions on large gatherings and parent volunteers, we have made a new plan. Classes will be running around our field with their class cohort and will be counting laps to work towards a community goal on September 29. We will send out more information closer to the day regarding donations to the Terry Fox Foundation and please watch for a news story on our Website soon after the run is complete:)
Picture Day: Picture Day is on October 1 at HMS. Lifetouch Photography has made some changes to their process to meet health and safety guidelines. Your are welcome to watch this video to get an idea of the measures they will be taking. Our students in the HUB are invited to come have your photo taken between 8:30-9:15 AM. Parents are asked to wait for your child outside or in your care as we are still not permitted to have parent visitors. Students can come to the door, ring the bell, and Mrs. Borrelli or Mrs. McAsey will take them to the gym to have their photo taken. Thanks so much for your cooperation.
Changes to Blue Cohort Recess schedule: As our students and teachers in the Blue Cohort tried out our new schedule, we found that the afternoons were feeling very long with no additional planned breaks after 12:50 PM and our music times all being scheduled in the morning. As a staff, we have decided to move the Blue Cohort recess to the afternoons to provide a better balance of continuous learning time and free play break time. There is no change to the number of minutes of instructional time students are receiving and the changes will not affect pick-up or drop-off times for families. The new schedule for Blue Cohort is as follows:
8:10 entry (8:08 warning bell to line up)
11:00-11:50 Lunch
1:15-1:32 Recess *NEW
2:57 Dismissal
The Friday schedule for the Blue group will remain the same as will the Green Cohort Schedule.
School Council/ Parent Association AGM: The HMS School Council/ Parent Association AGM is on Monday September 21 at 6:30 PM. School Council and Parent Association are open to all parents and guardians of students at HMS, including those in the HUB and those attending in-person learning. Our September AGM meeting will be held on-line via Zoom. Our School Council Executive sent the following message to all parents on their mailing list this week:
Welcome back to a new school year.  We all hope that you are well and getting used to all the new adventures 2020 brought.  We hope that you will be able to attend our School Council and Parents Association AGM coming up Monday September 21 at 6:30 via Zoom.  If you would like to attend this meeting please send an email to or send a DM through our Facebook page Parents of Haultain @parentsofhaultain and we will send you the meeting link on Monday.
