Principal’s Message | Reducing Stigma Around Mental Health

This week students and staff wore hats to school on May 3 to support raising awareness about mental health. This subject area has been one that has traditionally had a negative stigma attached to it. School staff understand the importance of creating learning environments where students have strong support systems to foster well-being. This happens when all members of a learning community are intentional about educating themselves and others about mental health. For example, do you know the difference between a mental health problem and mental illness? If this is an area that is still a little fuzzy for you, that’s understandable. The topic of mental health is only recently being discussed openly; however, you will find a lot of good information if you start looking into trusted sources like Alberta Health Services and Bell Let’s Talk. It is important for all of us to contribute to breaking away the stigma attached to mental illness, and this begins by educating ourselves.

Your child has been learning about mental health all year in their classrooms in a developmentally appropriate way guided by The Alberta Curriculum. It’s never too early to start talking about this at home as a family. Ask your child what they already know, you may be pleasantly surprised. Creating a culture of compassion and tolerance helps our students develop resiliency and know they are supported to grow into the best versions of themselves they can be.

Alien In-Line Skating

Next week students will be embarking on another in-line skating adventure with Alien In-line. Having volunteers available to support the prep work (taking on and off the skates and gear) is important, especially for our youngest students, so they can spend more time wheeling around and learning new skills. Your child’s teacher has a schedule for which day they will be skating and will be communicating this to you. If you are available to help in your child’s class or even other classes, please contact our amazing Parent Volunteer Coordinator Shawna McIntyre at ms.daisygirl@hotmail.com. We very much appreciate the support.

Tourette Syndrome Awareness

You will notice in the Upcoming Important Dates that June 7 is Tourette Syndrome Awareness Day. This is an important day for us at HMS. We have a member of our learning community with Tourette Syndrome. This young learner has demonstrated tremendous courage through the challenges of this medical condition. Your child will be able to tell you more about Tourette Syndrome as teachers have been educating their students about this condition. More notably, our brave student took time to visit each class to give a personalized presentation so our learning community would better understand the challenges of this condition. Please read the following excerpt authored by this student.

Hi, I am in Grade 4, and I have Tourette Syndrome. Tourette’s is a medical condition. It causes me to make loud sounds, have body movements and say things I don’t mean. Please understand that this is a medical condition, and I cannot control my tics. The tics I have now are screaming, squeaking, head shaking, and jaw movements but my tics change all the time.

When adults ask me to be quiet, this can make me uncomfortable and make my tics worse. I cannot control the volume of my tics.

We encourage you to learn more about Tourette Syndrome and wear teal on June 7.

Next Year Planning

We are beginning the early stages of planning for the 2023-2024 school year. Having accurate enrolment projections helps us to plan effectively, preventing the need to realign how many classrooms we have in September. If your child will not be attending our school in 2023-2024 please let us know, as soon as possible, by emailing haultainmemorial@cbe.ab.ca.
