Learning Commons at Hawkwood School
Students are encouraged to use the library learning commons regularly. Students are allowed to exchange resources as needed and at the discretion of their classroom teachers. Students will usually borrow two books at a time (one book for kindergarten students). Special circumstances may arise that will allow them to sign out more resources with learning commons staff or teacher permission. The loan period for students and parents is 2 weeks. The date that an item is due is stamped on the date due slip in the back of the book.
There are no overdue fines but students may be required to pay the replacement cost of books that are lost or damaged. Students will receive a borrower’s card in kindergarten and will use this card until the end of Grade 6. There will be a $1 charge to replace a lost borrower’s card.
Parents are welcome to borrow from the school library learning commons as well. To receive borrowing privileges, please speak to the library learning commons assistant. She will be happy to assist you.
A helpful site for parents and students when doing research/homework is – www.learnalberta.ca. The Online Reference Centre (ORC) can be accessed through this website. Please contact the school for the username and password.
Maker Kits
The library learning commons also has a collection of maker kits and resources such as robotics, electronics, construction sets, and recycled materials to support problem-based and project-based learning that relies upon hands-on, often collaborative, learning experiences as a method for solving authentic problems.
