Please ensure you have watched the Scholarships Video and read the Scholarships Handbook available on the HWW website, and Student Services D2L! Monthly Scholarship Listings are posted one month in advance of due dates. If searching more then one month in advance please visit the Archives folder Student Services D2L/ Content/Scholarships or previous year monthly postings listed under Scholarship Listings on the HWW website. Don’t forget to create a profile on the sites mentioned so you can get scholarships you fit the criteria for sent directly to your inbox!

Education Matters Website

Deadline: May1 (Opens early March)* Watch dates due! Some are due May 1, others May 30!

  1. Students create an account. * new system so all students create new account. Use non CBE email.
  2. Check off that you are a Scholarship Applicant NOT Grant Applicant.
  3. Eligibility/Matching– will narrow down the awards you should consider applying to (still read criteria carefully for each award).
  4. Select ‘ALL Awards’ as you do not have to apply for them all but cannot go back and select other awards later on! Demographics will save to all award applications.
  5. Consider saving essays in a Word document to copy/paste and use for future applications.
  6. Your counsellor will be the third party endorser; an email will be generated to your counsellor from Education Matters so that your transcript can be uploaded and average calculated by your counsellor.
  7. Counsellors will endorse as soon as possible. Do not wait for endorsement!
  8. Be sure to modify essays and answer all questions- they are not the same for each award!
  9. Reference letters must be signed (!) and may be used for more than one award but you will have to upload them for each award.
  10. Financial and Leadership information will be in a spreadsheet you will upload for each award you apply to.
  11. Applications can not be edited once submitted.

Five awards ($500), one in each area; academics, athletics, fine arts/drama, citizenship/community spirit, overcoming obstacles/challenges.

Canadian Citizen or perm resident, Alberta resident.  $300 - $2500. Everyone should apply!! You may receive $ for one year’s academic success or all three, Grade 10-12!

Apply once you have been accepted into a post secondary institution & once you have your complete official transcript.

Aboriginal Scholarships and Bursaries

Various Dates, 2022-23 applications open in May with deadlines in Fall and Winter

Applicants must be First Nations, Inuit, or Métis, an Alberta resident and enrolled or plan to enroll in a post-secondary program.

Premier’s Citizenship Award

Premier Citizenship Award Application

May 18 | Email or drop off to Guidance Counsellor

One student is nominated by their school based on citizenship, leadership, community service/ volunteer work with a positive impact on their school or community.  Academics may be considered after other eligibility criteria. Students may not apply directly for these awards.  One plaque per school.  Nominee is automatically entered for two other major monetary awards: Queen’s Golden Jubilee Citizenship Medal ($5000), AB Centennial Scholarship ($2,005). Additional paperwork will be required in a tight turn around time for the nominee.

TransCanada Empower Communities


May 6

Canadian citizen; enrolled in post secondary program; from a community near a TransCanada project. Complete a short pre-qualification form.

Calgary Italian Sportswomen’s Dinner Assoc.


May (TBD, not offering past 2 years)

Application must be typed and mailed by Canada Post- Xpresspost

$5,000 (3). Gr 12. Female. Italian heritage. Excellence in athletics, academics, leadership, fine arts & volunteering. Minimum 75% average. Registered in post sec for Fall

Must attend a celebratory dinner usually in October. A designate may attend if recipient is away at post-sec studies.

  • 2 letters of reference; one from athletic coach
  • Detailed description of achievements in school and community
  • Personal response

Vancouver College of Art and Design

Complete the request information/ scholarship application form. Submit a letter from a high school teacher certifying that entry materials are your original creation. This letter must be submitted on an official school letterhead. Submit a current high school transcript.

Please Note: A separate application to VCAD is required for admission to the school

John Laurie Scholarship $1000 (1 award)

Must be a First Nations, Metis or Inuit Gr 12 graduating student registered in full time first year post secondary.

75% average (5/30 level courses)

Reference letter re: school/community involvement or employment.

Local 38 Scholarship   $1000

Gr 12 graduating students whose parents are current,       retired or deceased ATA members, entering post-secondary, 80% average (5/30 level courses), 75% if AB ED identified learning need,  letter written by self re: character/citizenship qualities.

LGBTQ2S+ Scholarship $1000 (1 award)

Must submit a reference letter regarding involvement and leadership in activities within the LGBTQ2S+ community, either at school or in the community at large. The letter must address the qualities, character, citizenship and attributes of the individual applicant, as well as actions of support and/or advocacy

Black Canadian Merit Award

The Black Canadian Merit Award recognizes a student who is actively engaged within the black community, who demonstrates outstanding merit and leadership within the CBE.

  • Aufricht Family Fund - $3000-$5000, renewable for 3 years, Involvement in the community/leadership. High academic standing. Financial need. U of C or SAIT. May 30
  • Julia Turnbul Leadership Award - $1000 (5 awards). School leadership preferably through student politics, community leadership, volunteerism. May 30
  • Michael Gee - $2400, Midget hockey player, male or female, 15-18, nominated by coach May 31
  • Shannon Burwash Memorial - $1000 (2 awards), post sec emphasis on horse, agriculture, business or equine veterinary medicine. June 1
  • Shelagh Mikulak Memorial - $2000 (2 awards), enrolled in library and info science or library tech program in Canada, demonstrate passion for the library sciences field. Financial need. June 1
  • Fraser Lockwood Memorial - $2500, volunteer work in church/community/athletics/cultural/political *preference to Filipino community members June 30
  • FNMI Bursary - $3000 (4 awards), AB post secondary school, short essay re: connection to culture July 31
