$2000. Breakthrough Opportunity Bursary for New Immigrants

Criteria

$3000 (2 Awards). Completing Grade 12 diploma requirements and are new refugee or immigrant to Canada within the last 5 years. Grades sufficient for admission to post secondary program of at least two years in length; demonstrate financial need. 500 word essay sharing story of your arrival, challenges faced learning in a new country, involvement in new Canadian life, plans for the future. 1 reference from school official, employer or community leader.


Queen’s University Major Admission Awards & Queen’s Chancellor Scholarship

For major admission awards: By Nov 15 you should have applied for admission to Queens; must have access to the online student centre SOLUS & submit online application to Queens  by Dec 1, 2020 *Nomination required for the Chancellor (2 at HWW). Submit a paper copy of your online application for major awards to your counsellor by November 24, 2020.

Criteria

Superior academic ability, creative and original thinking, involvement in school or community activities, and proven leadership qualities. Financial need is also a consideration.

Apply for one or all admission awards by submitting a single Major Admission Award Application. (MAA)

Apply for admission to Queen's through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) prior to Nov 20 to meet the Dec 1 Major Admission Award Application deadline.

*Nomination required for the Chancellor (2 at HWW). $36,000 (50 awards) Approx. 90% average. Leadership. Creative thinking/ innovation. Extra-curricular.


TD Canada Trust Scholarship for Community Leadership

Criteria

Grade 12 students in their graduating year, who have outstanding dedication to solving a community problem or making their community a better place.  Minimum average of 75%.  Up to $70,000 value (20 available), $10,000 per year in tuition; $7500 per year additional expenses, opportunity for summer employment.  Apply online! 600 word essay required, letter of recommendation from the school and 2 community letters of support, transcript, and statement of financial need if it applies. Option to add two other 250 word essays. *3 copies of essays!


Shad Valley Scholarship Program

Criteria

Financial assistance to help students participate in the Shad Valley Program. 600 students gr 10-12 selected to attend this July program at 1 of 13 university residences across Canada. Automatic entrance awards to cover about ½ of tuition plus bursaries for financial need. Those interested in STEAM (Sci/Tech/Eng/Math) and entrepreneurship who have an interest in creativity and innovation should apply!! Academic results and extra-curricular considered in application process.


Calgary Stampede Poster Competition

Largest Art awards in Canada. Up to $20,000 in Scholarships to be shared among top 8. Age 15-24. AB resident. Submit 2 pieces of 2D Art (painting, photography, drawing, graphic design); 1 must be ‘Western art’.

Scholarship can be used for any education- not art specific.

2 reference letters; written statement of impact & possible education program. 1st place = $10,000


Immigrant Services Youth Scholarships

Can nominate yourself or ask someone who knows you in an academic/leadership/coach capacity to nominate you! Online nomination/application.

Criteria

Immigrant or refugee youth between the ages of 14 to 24.  50 scholarships.  Outstanding contributions or significant achievement in any of the following:  arts and culture, sports, community and volunteer activities, academics & leadership.  Must be able to attend the gala awards presentation typically in March.

Arthur Paulin Automotive Aftermarket

Criteria

$700 × 5 to support students planning to enrol in an automotive aftermarket industry related program or curriculum at a Canadian college or university.  This includes students pursuing their studies as an automotive apprentice.  It also includes studies in any of the following automotive sectors:  auto body, hard parts, heavy duty, or motive power (machinists). Financial hardship a consideration as well as leadership ability.

A free program to help low income youth save money for the future.  Money is saved in student’s own account and this organization matches it 4:1! Sponsored by Alberta Government and United Way. Ages 16-24. See online chart to see if your family income will qualify you!

Must attend a 2 hour $ management seminar 2 evenings per month for 9 months.

Calgary Calabrian Cultural and Heritage Society Scholarship

Morehead-Cain Merit Scholarship

 If seeking nomination:

  • start application and notify counsellor and recommender (teacher) by Oct 15. Complete ‘School Info’ and ‘Recommendation’ sections first in application
  • email will be sent by M-Cain to your counsellor and teacher recommender so they submit a school report/ transcript/ reference letter by Oct 30
  • you must complete application by Oct 30

Criteria

Fully funded 4 year merit scholarship valued at $115,000.

60 are given out to students attending the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Canadians: 15- 20 semi-finalists; interview; 4-6 finalists flown to Chapel Hill for a weekend of fellowship & interviews.

Strength of character, appetite for learning, physical vigour, and leadership are essential.

  *Admission to University is a separate process. Deadline for UNC is Jan 15, 2021.

Loran Award

Start late Sept notifying your reference. 

Deadline to submit at HWW is Oct 8th if you wish to be a sponsored applicant:

  • select ‘Seeking Sponsorship from my school’ on the online application
  • enter the name of your guidance counsellor and their email address as school contact (NOT your teacher– that comes in the reference section)
  • submit a copy of your application to guidance counsellor by Oct 8th . The school will not receive online notification you are wishing to be nominated UNTIL the reference letter has been submitted online so it is imperative to notify your reference early!
  • You will be notified by Oct 15 if you are 1 of 3 chosen HWW nominees selected by the scholarship committee and your counsellor will then complete the nomination by the Oct 15, 2020, 8 pm East, due date/time.
  •  All students who are not nominees can still apply as direct pool applicants by October 22, 2020, 8pm East, due date/time.

Criteria

National program, based on character, service, and leadership.  Selection criteria include academic excellence, community and extracurricular involvement.  There are 30 major financial awards, valued at up to $100,000 and tenable at 25 universities. There are also over 100 finalist and provincial awards up to $5000.

Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Minimum average 85%.

Submit online application directly to Loran and a copy to counsellor by Oct 8th if seeking school nomination. Transcripts and endorsements must be submitted online. Give references at least 2 weeks notice so ask them in September!


University of Toronto National Book Award and National Scholarship Program

School Nomination required for Book Award – if interested contact your guidance counsellor by Oct 9th. You will be required to submit a short application to the guidance office by Oct 12th. You will be notified if you are the selected nominee chosen by the HWW scholarship committee. Our school nomination will then be completed by a guidance counsellor by the October 15 deadline.

Criteria

Superior academic performance, original & creative thought and exceptional achievement in a broad context.  Enthusiasm for intellectual exploration and involvement in the life of their school and community.

For the National Book Award, each school may choose one outstanding student on the basis of the above criteria.  The national book award will be presented to the student and they may subsequently apply for the National Scholarship Competition.

Student is not required to attend U of T for the Book Award.

Students can still apply as direct applicants for the National Scholarship if they are not nominated for the Book Award. (the award is actually prestige and a book, as well as your name on a plaque kept at HWW - no monetary value)


University of Toronto National Scholarship Program

Online application available in mid September. A reference letter and transcript must accompany your application. Give at least 2 weeks notice to references!

Criteria

Approx 10 National Scholarship winners receive full tuition and fees for four years of undergraduate study at the U of T, residence support for 1 year, renewable monetary award based on individual financial circumstances.

Finalists (approx. 20) who are not National Scholar winners will receive Arbor scholarships valued at $7500 for the first year, renewable at $1500 for subsequent years. If you were not nominated for the Book Award you can still apply! Online application; upload transcript.


Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarship Program & Entrepreneurial Scholarship

Criteria

$5000 (160 awards), Integrity and perseverance overcoming adversity; financial need ($65,000 or less net income per family); involvement in co-curricular and community activities; a minimum grade percentage of 65; attend university Fall 2021; Canadian Citizenship.

Apply online. Support form completed by adult online only after you fill out/lock in adversity section; Counsellor certification form completed online after you complete academic section.

New: Entrepreneurial Scholarships $10,000 (10 awards) – same criteria as above plus desire and ability to be entrepreneurial in a chosen field *Same application form as above.

Nomination is required online. If you wish to be nominated talk to a teacher or community member who can speak to your involvement in the areas listed. Deadline for nominations for the 2020/21 Awards is not yet posted, but likely in November.

Criteria

Between 14 and 24 years old.  Born outside Canada. Canadian Citizen or permanent resident living in Calgary or surrounding area.  Contributions towards arts and culture, sports, community and volunteer activities, leadership or academics.

Awards presented at the Immigrants of Distinction Awards Gala TBD – usually March. Self nomination is okay; resume and 2 references required.


Korean Veterans Association of Canada
