Hidden Valley Acceptable Use Policy

The use of technology is an integral part of learning at all CBE schools, as required by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Program of Studies. Students are encouraged to use our network and digital learning tools to collaborate with others to change the world in meaningful, positive ways.

The CBE provides networked digital resources to students in support of student learning and the delivery of curriculum. When students access the web in school they may intentionally or unintentionally go to websites that contain inappropriate material. CBE Administrative Regulation 1062 – Acceptable Use of Electronic Information Resources, describes unacceptable student behavior when using CBE networked computers to access the Internet and potential consequences for unacceptable use. Please take the time to review this document.

The purpose of the Acceptable Use Policy is to ensure that all electronic devices at Hidden Valley School are used responsibly and appropriately and that all users understand this expectation. Our focus will be on becoming good digital citizens and to teach students their responsibilities for appropriate use and behavior when using electronic devices. 

Parents/guardians are encouraged to discuss the learning opportunities and the risks with their child\children. 

By using the school’s computers and/or the network, students agree to the guidelines for digital technology use outlined in this document.

Students are encouraged to use digital technology to:

• Access, critically assess, and communicate information and understanding
• Seek alternative viewpoints
• Collaborate during inquiry
• Construct personal knowledge and meaning
• Demonstrate understandings
• Organize and manipulate data Interact with others

Prohibited acts include:

• Use of someone else’s CBE account or access to network
• Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures
• Using obscene language
• Harassing, insulting or attacking another person or their reputation
• Trespassing in other people’s folders, work or files
• Accessing, posting, sending or downloading inappropriate material
• Assuming the identity of another person to gain information In any way, moving, opening hardware or computer accessories
• Any attempt and/or threats to harm a person Plagiarism of online content
• Posting, publishing, circulating or distributing personal information about oneself or others without the supervision and consent of a staff member
• Use of technology or the network to access sites/software not approved by staff

The school will ensure that all ICT outcomes including those relating to student safety on the Internet and information literacy are met as required by Alberta Education.

• The school will carefully supervise what students’ access on the Internet while at school.
• The school will provide web awareness training to all new staff yearly.
• Teachers and students are encouraged to use the reliable and authoritative resources that are currently available for all CBE students, parents/guardians and staff:
• Learn Alberta Online Reference Centre (user ID = LA06, password=4105).
• Desire2Learn – D2L: is a learning platform available to all our staff and students. It is a secure, password-protected environment for collaboration, communication, organization and assessment.
