Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) are part of a balanced, broad-based program of student assessment for Grades 6 and 9 students. The results provide some of the information that guides our educators as they set targets for student achievement and track the results of school improvement initiatives. Visit the CBE website for more information on our students’ provincial testing.

Provincial Achievement Tests Cancelled

Due to the continued disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the CBE will not be administering Grade 6 and 9 Provincial Achievement Tests in the 2020-21 school year. We believe this is the right decision in a year where direction from Alberta Education and Alberta Health continues to evolve rapidly.

Teachers will remain focused on delivering the programs of study for all courses, and will continue to assess student achievement based on the grade level outcomes as determined by the Province of Alberta.

Provincial Achievement Tests

In May and June, Grade 6 and 9 students throughout the province write Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) in language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. Results from these tests will provide Alberta Education, school administrators, teachers, parents/guardians, students and the public with information about what students know and can do in relation to provincial standards at the end of Grade 6 and Grade 9.

All Grade 6 and Grade 9 CBE Home Education students will write PATs at the test center in Lord Shaughnessy School (2336 53 Ave. SW, Calgary AB) where we are equipped with space, supervision and adequate technology. A Grade 6 or 9 student who does not write the scheduled PATs will be marked either excused or absent.

Excused or Absent

Excused will be requested and negotiated ahead of time with the Principal for reasons which may include anxiety, a learning disability, etc., and the parent wants this reason documented.

Absent will occur when the student is ill on the scheduled day or the parent chooses not to bring them to the PAT There are no academic consequences for either of the above. For more information about Grade 6 or Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Tests, please visit the Alberta Education website: https://education.alberta.ca/provincial-achievement-tests/
