French

All French courses are designed on the idea that students are learning French for real-life purposes – to understand and communicate in daily life. Because students come to us with a wide range of skills, from beginner to advanced, placement may occur at any level. Grade 9 teachers will make recommendations for entering Grade 10’s, while students entering at Grade 11 or 12 will be evaluated for placement.

French Language and Culture 10 (3-Y)

5 credits
Prerequisite: None

This is a course for beginners. Student who have never studied French or who have achieved less than 80% in grade 9 French are strongly advised to register in French 10. Verb tenses will include present, recent past and near future. Themes to be covered include the following: school, people around us, weather, celebrations, clothing, food, housing, daily and leisure activities, trades, and professions. Students will also use technology as an effective tool in their learning and research on culture.

French Language and Culture 20 (3-Y)

5 credits 
Prerequisite: French Language and Culture 10 (3-Y) or Equivalent 

Students who have achieved more than 80% in grade 9 French and have a portfolio of work to show they have completed the contents of beginning French are eligible to register in this course. Themes to be covered include a review of themes from French 10 and the following: friends, fashion, social life, outdoor activities, clubs, shopping, expressing feeling and opinions. Verb tenses will include present, past, and future (immediate and simple). The use of the past tenses (passé composé and imparfait) will be stressed in this course/ Also to be introduced: comparative and superlative of adjectives and adverbs, and pronominal verbs. Students will also use technology as an effective tool in their learning and research on culture.

French Language and Culture 30 (3-Y)

5 credits 
Prerequisite: French Language and Culture 20 (3-Y) or Equivalent 

Themes to be covered include a review of French 10 and 20 and the following: world of work, travel, excursions, money, role of media, conservation, environment, life after high school, etc. Verb tenses will include past ( passé compose, imparfait), present, future (futur proche, futur simple), present conditional. Also to be introduced: direct and indirect object pronouns. Students will also use technology as an effective tool in their learning and research on culture.
