Back to School Information

Hello JJ families!

Welcome back to school!  The time has come to wind down our summer and start gearing up for back to school.  Time sure flies when we are on summer holidays!  I truly hope everyone had a fun and relaxing summer.

There is lots of information to share with you, so please read each of the items thoroughly.

1.     COVID PROTOCOLS

All families received communication from CBE on August 18 about the COVID protocols that schools are required to have in place.  If you didn't get a chance to read the information, please read it here.   It is posted on our website for easy access.

As a CBE school, we are required to follow all protocols set out by our board in conjunction with Alberta Health Services and Alberta Education.

·       This is a reminder that all students and staff are required to wear masks each day at school.  This measure will be in place for the time being.  Students are required to wear masks when working in groups, moving around the classroom and walking in the halls.  When students are sitting at their desks and facing the same direction, they are allowed to remove their masks.

·       No parents or outside visitors are permitted entry to the school under any circumstances.  Thank you for your understanding.

·       Students and staff will be required to sanitize and wash hands multiple times a day.  Students will sanitize upon entering the school, entering and exiting the gym for music, and entering and exiting classrooms.

·       Physical distancing will occur when and where possible.

·       Cohorting will remain in place.  This means that classes are cohorted by language grades within our school.  There will be no buddy classes or mixing of cohorts are any time.  As part of cohorting, each grade will have a specific entry and exit door that they are permitted to use.

·       Staff vaccination information is private and confidential to each individual staff member.  It is not appropriate to ask staff if they are vaccinated- they are not expected to divulge any personal information.

2.     OFFICE HOURS

The school office opens on Wednesday, August 25.  Mrs. Larsen and Mrs. Stahl will be answering phones and will be happy to take your calls!  They will not be sharing class list information with families. Please see the next information item for more detail about teachers and class lists.  Office hours are as listed:

·       Monday to Thursday 7:45 am – 3:00 pm

·       Friday 7:45 am – 12:30 pm

For more information about how to contact the school, please check our website under CONTACT US.

3.     BACK TO SCHOOL INFORMATION

Teachers are officially back to school on Friday, August 27.  We will have three staff days- August 27, 30, 31.  Teachers will be meeting with admin for professional development and back to school meetings.  During this time, they will get to know their teaching team and set up their classrooms, review their class lists and start making personal phone calls to families.

Each teacher in grades 1-4 will call each family on their list starting MONDAY, AUGUST 30.  Do not expect a phone call prior to that date.  It will take time for teachers to make these calls so please be patient.  These calls may take two days to complete so do not be surprised if you hear from them on August 31.  Please be reminded that there will be no class switches made.  This is an important policy in place by administration.

During each phone call, teachers will share first day of school procedures, entry and exit doors, relaxed entry, dismissal, classroom number etc.

Due to COVID protocols that are in place, there will be no in school tours as part of any transition meetings.

4.      KINDERGARTEN STAGGERED ENTRY (both language tracks)

We will have a staggered entry for Kindergarten students on September 1- 3. If a student is new to the school in August, the date for the first day of classes will be communicated at the time of registration.  Regular classes for Kindergarten begin on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.

Please meet the Kindergarten teachers at the designated Kindergarten door (the doors by the school garden on the west side of the building) at the times below.  Kindergarten teachers will share additional classroom information with parents at staggered entry.

7.     SCHOOL STAFF

We have had some staffing changes this year.  For a complete list of our amazing JJ staff, please check Our Staff page on the website.  Each teacher's name is hyperlinked to their email address for quick use!

8.     COMMUNICATION

Don't Miss Out on School Messages!!!  Each Friday, parents will receive a Week at a Glance email that outlines everything that's happening for the upcoming week.  You will want to be in the know each week so make sure that you have opted in to receive these messages!  Please read the information below very carefully.

Due to Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation, parents and guardians need to subscribe online to receive some school messages on topics like student fees, picture days, field trip costs, yearbooks, fun lunches and more. Subscribe online at www.cbe.ab.ca/subscribe

In addition, to receive any text messages from our school or the Calgary Board of Education, please opt in for texts. Use the cell phone on file with the school to text the word YES to the six-digit number 978338.

There is no extra cost to receive SMS messages from CBE, but standard message rates and data charges from your carrier apply when you receive messages from us. See all terms and conditions at www.cbe.ab.ca/SMS.

For more information, visit www.cbe.ab.ca/subscribe or view Questions and Answers.

OPT IN TO RECEIVE TEXT MESSAGES FROM CBE

Please read the information on how to receive text messages from CBE here.

9.      TRANSPORTATION

Transportation information can be found on our website.  Please know, the school does not set bus routes or stops

Parents/guardians whose children access yellow bus service can view the status of their bus using the MyBusStop App or on My School Bus Monitor.

Visit CBE Transportation  for forms and more information.

10.   SCHOOL SUPPLIES, LUNCH AND SNACKS

Your student's classroom supplies are purchased by the CBE.   Later in the school year you will find, an Instructional Fee in your students MyCBE Powerschool Account under Fee's to pay for these supplies. The first day of classes please send your student to school with their backpack, 2 facemasks (one to wear into the school, a spare in their backpack) indoor shoes, water bottle, a snack for nutrition break, and lunch if they will be a part of the Lunch Program. It is a good idea to include a spare set of clothing for students in Kindergarten and Grade 1.

Please remember that all lunches and snacks must be nut aware- please do not send any food that contains traces of nuts.  Thank you for your understanding.

11.  NOON SUPERVISION

We will advise parents of when the CBE Lunch Program Registration opens. This is also done through your student's MyCBE Powerschool Account. All students are welcome to begin bringing their lunch, and be a part of the Lunch Program the first days of classes.

12.   MEDICATION

If your student requires use of a puffer or administration of epi-pen/other medications while at school, a Student Health Plan Form (below) must be filled out and brought to the office with the medication.

https://www.cbe.ab.ca/FormsManuals/Student-Health-Plan.pdf - search=student%20health%20plan

Thank you for your time and attention to the above information.  We know there is a lot to process but hopefully you are feeling well informed!

We look forward to seeing everyone on September 1!  Enjoy the last few days of summer vacation!

Bobbi Kivi

Principal
