Staffing and Funding Update

Our school has received additional funding from Alberta Education for students in Grades 1-3 who may require extra support in reading and mathematics. We have received funding to hire a full-time temporary teacher.  This funding from Alberta Education is intended to help support learning as a direct result of the impacts from COVID-19.

Each year, teachers complete a variety of assessments to determine what students know.  This year, some additional assessments were required for Alberta Education.  All Grade 2 and 3 students were assessed in September (in literacy and math) and this has helped inform where support is most needed. In January 2022, we will be required to assess all Grade 1 students for Alberta Education in order to determine who else will benefit from this support.

In the coming weeks there will be some changes at the school as we shift teacher responsibilities and welcome some new, temporary staff to our school.

The following changes will occur:

·       Ms. Galvin will be providing support to our English students in Grades 2 and 3, as well as the Grade 3 students in French Immersion

·       Newly hired teacher, Brooke Ellsworth, will be the new temporary teacher for Ms. Galvin's grade 3 class.

·       Ms. Galvin will continue to be actively involved with her grade 3 class.  The support that she will be providing will be within the inclusive environment of the grade 2 and 3 classes.

·       In addition, to provide support to the French Immersion grade 2 students, Mme. Cindy, will work with identified students to provide additional learning supports.  Ms. Ellsworth will relieve Mme. Cindy during English instruction a couple of times each week. There will be minimal impact on Mme. Cindy's classroom.

These changes will take effect November 29, 2021 and are scheduled to be in place until the end of March. We will work to ensure there is the minimal disruption to student learning during the transition.  At this time, we are working to analyze the data of the assessments to identify what students will require support.  If your child will require additional support based on the specific assessments for Alberta Education, the classroom teacher will contact you in the coming week.

I would like to officially welcome Ms. Ellsworth to the JJ family!  We are looking forward to having her join our staff.  I would also like to thank Ms. Galvin and Mme. Cindy for their leadership and flexibility as we re-structure their teaching load mid-year.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.
