Principal's Message

What stories does the land have to tell?

Our school's inquiry focus this year is “What stories does the land have to tell?".  This question allows for rich and rigorous exploration of land-based learning through the graded curriculum.
On October 18, CBE had it's first ever Indigenous Professional Learning day.  Janet Johnstone staff participated in an outdoor exploration of Fish Creek Park with a focus on how to connect our curriculum with our school inquiry question.  The question “What stories does the land have to tell?" will help develop the following concepts:
·      Students will learn about the history and the land around our school (what it means to live on Treaty 7 land)
·      Students will develop a personal connection to the Acknowledgement of the Land
·      As a school, we will develop a shared and collective understanding of the Acknowledgement of the Land
All of this learning is part of our school's commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation call to action 63.iii Building student capacity for intercultural understanding (equity), empathy, and mutual respect.  Our School Development Plan will continue to focus on developing empathy and respect for each other. The SDP for the 2021/22 school year will be available in November.  Please watch for more information about our goals and progress over the coming weeks.
Our school received a grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts to help enrich our focus on “What stories does the land have to tell?".  We will be working with Trickster Theater in May!  Trickster Theater is a theater group that works with each class in the school, in both language programs.  As part of our School Development Plan's focus on oral language proficiency, each class will have the opportunity to express their understanding of the school wide inquiry question through drama.  We are looking forward to this rich and rigorous experience that will be a culmination of our work for the 2021/22 school year.  More information about our work with Trickster will be provided in March.  Thank you to our incredible School Council for matching the monetary amount from the AFA grant so that we can work with Trickster for the week long residency (May 2-6).
