Student progress is communicated in a number of ways and serves the common purpose of building shared understandings of what students know and can do in day-to-day learning experiences. The best person to tell you about what they are learning is your child. Visit the CBE website for a list of questions you can ask your child about how they are doing at school.
Report Cards
Reporting student achievement consists of providing parents with two written reports. Report Cards will be sent home in January and June. Please see our Calendar for dates.
Literacy and Numeracy Intervention- Mrs. Galvin
For the 2021-2022 school year, Alberta Learning provided a collection of reading and numeracy tasks to assess the early skill development of all grade 1-3 students. The grade two and three students were assessed in September and a 16-week full time teacher was provided to help support those who were found to be struggling with beginning reading and numeracy skills. To support these students, a combination of working in the classroom and taking these students out for small group intervention are being used.
The assessment tasks that were completed identified specific areas for targeted instruction. When learning to read, many students have difficulty understanding and applying the relationships between spellings and sounds, and will continue to have difficulty reading new words if they do not receive intensive instruction that targets the teaching of common multi-letter sound relationships and phonological decoding (e.g., Ehri et al., 2001; Galuschka et al., 2014; National Reading Panel, 2000; Savage & Cloutier, 2018)
To uncover the learning gaps, small group intervention started. Students in these groups are developing necessary foundational skills to be successful with literacy and numeracy. Effective reading intervention occurs when students are provided with direct, explicit, systematic instruction daily for an extended period of time to ensure that these skills and knowledge of reading have been mastered (Alberta Education Reading Intervention Lessons: A Guide to Systematic Phonics Instruction 2021).
Once students demonstrate understanding of the foundational skills, they will be removed from the group and monitored within the classroom.
Grade one students are in the process of completing the reading and numeracy assessments. The results will indicate where explicit, targeted instruction or intervention is required. Providing these supports for our youngest learners is imperative to developing the foundational skills for math and literacy development.
Iris
Iris is a web-based application used to support the process of students’ understanding of themselves as learners. With Iris, students can develop a learning plan to document their personal learning experiences and to set direction for further learning. Learning plans also provide the opportunity for students to share their learning with their teachers and parents or guardians and to receive feedback from them about what they are doing well and how they can improve.
Access to Teachers
