JES | Planning for 2022-23 Student Cohorts
Classroom cohorts at Jennie Elliott is a process that takes teachers and the leadership team many hours of careful thought and consideration and is truly a year long process as individual teachers and grade teams work to understand the learning styles and needs of their students.
We have already begun the process of planning our 2022-23 school year. Each year we work to create class groups that support each student’s social, emotional and educational learning styles and needs. We welcome parent input as part of the process and as members of each child’s learning team. Due to the complexity involved in making class groups, please understand the final decision rests with the school in relation to what is educationally best for each student and cohort of students. Specific teacher requests cannot be accommodated and we will do everything we can to ensure your child has at least one “best” friend in their new classroom next year.
If you have any information you feel is relevant in support of your child’s learning needs please engage the FAQ and Survey and submit before 11:59 PM April 29th. Watch for this School Messenger, scheduled to send later tonight, specific to this.
CBE | Parent Resource - Literacy and Math Frameworks: Supporting Learning Excellence
On March 8 CBE presented the Literacy and Math Frameworks to the Board of Trustees and posted these to our public-facing website. To support families in understanding the ways in which these frameworks outline how we will approach teaching and learning in CBE, a parent resource titled: Literacy and Math Frameworks | Supporting Learning Excellence was created. CBE | AB Education - Learning Disruption GrantWe have received the update regarding funding for the Learning Disruption Grant from Alberta Education and have made the decision that all allocated staffing originally funded through the Learning Disruption Grant will be maintained until the end of the school year (June 30). Based on school specific grade 1 student data, there are some schools who will receive an increase in FTE from what was originally allocated in December 2021 to support interventions until the end of June. JES is one of these schools so we will be looking to resource that position as early as April 11 through to June 30, 2022. Where is the money coming from? - CBE has received just over $2.5 million from Alberta Education to support grade 1 learning interventions for the next 12 weeks through the Learning Disruption Grant.
- In February 2022, the Minister of Education approved the CBE Board of Trustees request to access $14 million from reserves to support COVID-19 measures and impacts.
- Together, with the Learning Disruption grant funding, the CBE is maintaining the current staffing levels until the end of June 2022.

Support can is available. It’s been a busy week back but the buzz in the hallways is returning in conjunction with the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. By no means have we left Covid behind, as evidenced in my own family right now, but there is a new sense or feeling of excitement that we might finally be on the downward side. Your kids are doing a great job with supporting each other in wearing or not wearing masks, attending to washing or sanitizing their hands and rediscovering the playground without the constraints of grade team zones. Have a great weekend. My plans are to fix everything I broke on my dirt bike and get it ready for the next adventure.

JES | Covid-19 Updates
When we return from Spring Break we will continue to evaluate our school and the situation and respond in manner that eases staff and students out of the Covid-19 protocols and restrictions. To date we have: Moving forward we have and will continue with: - Soft Entry to school at 8:50am and 12:35 for PM Kindergarten
- Staggered Lunch and Nutrition breaks
- Additional air filtration
- Additional cleaning staff on site for high touch points
- Encouragement / opportunity to wash or sanitize
- AHS Covid-19 daily checklist
Additional measures we are taking to ease out of the Covid-19 restrictions - Classroom configurations are being reset to encourage collaboration between students
- Cohorting of students internally and externally is easing
- Buddy Classes are being formed and integration opportunities for pour system classroom students are being engaged
- Food for events such as end of year celebrations will be welcomed in as long as it arrives individually packaged.
- Teacher may reach out to share ideas as to what could be sent in.
- Outdoor Play area cohorts are easing as we return to play strategies reminiscent of pre-covid days
We will continue with this measured approach and fully anticipate, as people become more comfortable with the easement of restrictions, that we will continue to expand cohorts and introduce opportunities such as field trips and in person Artist in Residence opportunities.

CBE | Donations
New In-kind Donations Process Individuals, businesses or community groups can donate goods to any CBE school using the new In-kind Donations Form, which is available on the CBE corporate website Donate page. If a donor reaches out to you directly please ask them to go through this process and they can specify your school in the donations form. Donation offers will be initially assessed by Corporate Partnerships before being offered to schools based on the donor’s request.
I hope that you all have an opportunity to enjoy the break. I am off to a little town in Utah called Green River. Google it as it has an interesting history. The town is small and broken but we love it as it provides a great access point to endless dirt bike trails. If you were a fan of Looney Tunes cartoons and watched Wylie coyote and the Road Runner you will know the type of terrain I am heading for. Here is a nice compilation of remastered cartoons for your viewing pleasure.

Last night you will have received the message from our Chief Superintendent Mr. Chris Usih. Within this message Chief Usih has shared out the initial steps moving forward in our efforts to return to a more normalized educational experience for your children. As a school we received this information just a few hours before it was sent to you. For Jennie Elliott there is much to consider as we determine how best to proceed in relation to our school and community. We ask that you allow us the time and space to fully understand the updates and adjustments or retraction of protocols before we make any firm decisions. As always our main concern is the health and safety of all who enter and through this our entire community.

Edmonton Public Library | Kitchen Table Classroom: Helping Your Child Learn to Read, Grades 3-6 Tuesday, March 1 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. the Calgary and Edmonton Public Libraries, in partnership with literacy experts Michelle Bence and Dr. Miriam Ramzy, are hosting a virtual session on the importance of foundational literacy skills for students in upper elementary school. | Hello everyone, If you have not received masks and your second Home Rapid Test Kit please watch for them next week. Volunteers were in and separated them out and got them to classrooms to be sent home. Some of you have returned your Kits – THANK YOU as we did not receive enough for staff and as such several have volunteered to go without. The Kits returned won’t go unused.
JES | Pink Shirt Day
Wednesday February 23rd is PINK SHIRT DAY! Students and staff are encouraged to wear anything pink to show support. Pink shirt day is not only about promoting and celebrating kindness within our school community, but about bringing an awareness to bullying and how standing up to bullying can create a Welcoming, Caring, Respectful and Safe work and Learning environment that is inclusive for everyone. Students will be engaged in various activities throughout the week that promote discussion around the question “How do we lift each other up?”. JES | Veterans Food Bank Drive
November is long gone and the 'giving season' of December is in the past. Yet, veterans still need our help. In connection to this year's Pink Shirt Day theme, "Lift Each Other Up”, JES will be collecting non-perishable food donations for the Veterans Food Bank from February 22 - 25. As we discuss kindness and consider others in the community throughout the week, we encourage families to support this initiative. Donations to the Veterans Food Bank will be collected in the boxes located outside the gym doors in the front foyer.

In February, the Calgary Board of Education recognizes Black History Month by celebrating the contributions of Black Canadians in communities across the country. While it is a time to celebrate cultural diversity, it is also a time to learn and reflect on Canada’s history with racism, discrimination and the struggle for human rights. Within Jennie Elliott individual classrooms will engage in different ways that are meaningful to the age and grade level of their students. My daughter arrives tonight! Not going to lie, I’m pretty excited to see her but in this message my PROUD DAD moment goes to my son who is studying Chemistry with a minor in Biology at Mount Royal University. He just received a letter informing that he has been placed on the Dean’s Honour role for the Fall 2021 semester. Each of the science classes he takes include labs that are as much work or more than the class itself. This effectively doubles his commitment. From my own memories of taking some science courses at UofC I know how demanding his schedule is. From a child who did not read until Grade 3 to the Deans Honour Roll confirms for me that the right perspective, perseverance, work ethic and a positive attitude will take you far in this world. We’ll be heading out tonight for a celebratory dinner of his choosing. Have a great Family Day weekend.

| Hello everyone, CBE | Covid-19 - Update In light of the provincial announcement, February 8, 2022, there are many elements of day-to-day school operations that must be reviewed. As a system we will be taking a staged approach to this work. As a school we will wait for directives. For now, please note the following important updates: - Masking
- Monday, Feb. 14, masking for students will be optional.
- Mandatory adult masking requirements (including staff, visitors, spectators etc.) remain in place beyond Feb. 14.
- Further updates with respect to the provincial Stage 2 guidance and the impact on adults in schools will be addressed and more information will be provided.
- Visitors and Volunteers in Schools
- Visitors and volunteers in schools are not required to show proof of vaccination effective immediately.
- Daily Health Checklist
- Shifts to Online Learning
- Schools may continue to request transitions to online learning for individual classes and/or grades due to operational challenges.
All other health measures including enhanced cleaning remain in place. We will continue to review measures in the context of provincial guidance and local context. Thank you for your patience and you can expect ongoing communication and updates. Alberta Education | Rapid Test Kits and Masks – Second Shipment Our second shipment of Masks and Rapid Test Kits have arrived IMG_6961.jpeg – odd timing with the announcement for certain but we are happy to split out the order and send them home next week. We are reaching out to Volunteers to work through the shipment to organize and distribute the Masks to classrooms. When teachers have the Test Kits they will assign one box to each student and send home. Please anticipate receiving these on or before February 25 but it will be dependent on how quickly we can secure Volunteers to work through the process. We are nearing the end of the restrictions, at least that is how it feels following Tuesday's announcement, and as excited by this as I am it is our professional responsibility and duty to your children and through them to you, our community, to stay the course. Thank you for your support. Help us make Valentine's Day as awesome for your children as you can but please adhere to the current Covid-19 protocols. After exploring a number of options to improve ventilation in our schools, we have made the decision to install upgraded MERV 13 filters wherever possible and these filters will be changed more frequently. In addition, all schools are mechanically ventilated and systems are set to maximize air exchange. We have just received and installed the MERV 13 filters. | Hello everyone, We are putting the final touches to our annual School Planning Survey. It will be available following a brief presentation at the next School Council meeting February 28th. In looking back over previous year's survey results we see that we have a lot of support and receive fabulous feedback. Your feedback shapes our decisions as we move forward into each new school year. The survey this year is by design a little shorted and easier to complete. We have seen in previous survey submissions that many start but do not finish or attend to all the questions. This year's survey should take 4 – 7 minutes. Our Masks and Rapid Test Kits have been distributed to classrooms, staff and students. If your child(ren) were away this week we have held your Home Rapid Test Kits here at the main office. We can give them to your child when they return or if you prefer you can pop over and pick them up. We are happy to accommodate either way. Alberta Health Services will no longer support schools to inform close contacts or the school community of positive cases. Schools will continue to monitor school absenteeism due to illness. Additional Health Measures Throughout the pandemic, the CBE has met or exceeded health measures recommended by government. These health measures include: - Staying home when sick;
- A vaccination policy for employees, volunteers and CBE;

- Enhanced cleaning and disinfection of high traffic/touch areas
CBE | Prepare for Possible Shift to At-Home Learning While maintaining in-person learning is a priority, schools are planning for potential transitions to at-home learning if required. The decision to transition individual classes or grades to at-home learning will be based on staff availability and/or student absentee rates. All moves to at-home learning for entire schools or school authorities require approval or direction from the Minister of Education. Decisions to move individual classes or multiple classes within a school will be decided by CBE Administration.
We know the spread of COVID-19 has and will continue to impact staffing levels across the organization. Despite increasing our substitute teacher roster and continuously hiring new substitutes, we anticipate staffing challenges will occur.

It looks to be a warm and sunny weekend. Hopefully this will be the trend for February. Hopefully I haven’t jinxed it think. Thank you to all who have taken time to reach out to your classroom teachers and us in the main office. The kind words and tokens of appreciation go a long way with staff who are feeling stretched.

It, in the Film industry, is a very difficult program to get into as it draws students from around the world. She has been a writer from the moment she could grasp a pencil… I see the same love for writing and storytelling in some of your children. | Hello everyone, Alberta Education | Rapid Test Kits and Masks - UPDATE We still have not received our shipment of Masks or Home Rapid Test Kits from Alberta Health. When we do we will sort and distribute to each student and staff member as directed by Alberta Health and Alberta Education. The shipment, when received, is directly from the government of Alberta and as such we have no ability to track its progress. Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience. Until then we continue to offer the same type of masks to anyone who arrives without or who requires additional masks throughout the day. Family Literacy Day - January 27, 2022 Family Literacy Day, a national awareness initiative, is held annually on January 27 to promote to families the importance of reading and other literacy-related activities. Making at least a little time each day for learning together is crucial to a child's development. ABC Life Literacy Canada encourages families to “Take 20." Take 20 minutes to make learning together a part of your every day and it can dramatically improve a child's literacy skills and help parents with their own skills, too. Alberta Education | e-Tutorials Gr 4-9 Alberta Education has made available pre-recorded tutoring sessions that support literacy and numeracy skills for students in Grades 4-9 though the e-Tutoring Hub. The e-Tutoring Hub offers sessions that students and their parents can access to build literacy and numeracy skills. Alberta Education expects a modest launch with only 4-5 pre-recorded resource videos, with more videos developed in the coming weeks. Later this year, these resources will be expanded to cover more grades and subjects and will include live tutoring. CBE | Ventilation in Schools - UPDATE After exploring a number of options to improve ventilation in our schools, CBE has made the decision to install upgraded MERV 13 filters wherever possible and these filters will be changed more frequently. In addition, all schools are mechanically ventilated and systems are set to maximize air exchange. Over the past two years, Alberta Labour, Occupational Health & Safety and Alberta Health Services have inspected CBE schools and determined that health measures in place are fully compliant with existing government recommendations. The CBE is exploring other ventilation options that consider the impact on school building systems and available resources. We will continue to keep you informed as information becomes available. | Hello everyone, Normally I would be welcoming you all back from winter break but as is the case this is more of a 'looking forward to seeing you next week' type message. I hope your time over the break was spent with those you love and participating in all that makes you happy. It was too cold for Fat Biking most of the time so I was indoors with my family rediscovering my love of board games and short bread cookies. JES | AM Soft Entry 8:50 - 9:05am All doors will be open to students as always from 8:50 am to 9:05am each school day. We offer the opportunity for entry upon arrival and internal supervision of students to help ensure we don't have too many children collecting at the entry ways, stairwells or in the hallways. It gives us the opportunity to help each child enter in a safe and regulated manner, check in with them, and ensure that they have opportunity to sanitize and engage in wearing a mask. It is for all of our safety within the school and community. In reflection of this we ask that you also demonstrate proper mask etiquette when dropping off or picking up your children from these door ways especially if you have opportunity to speak with any staff during these tie periods. CBE | COVID-19 Jan 10 return to School The following was sent out to all from CBE January 6th but it is important to share out again and the most current information that I have as of end of day today. Masks and Rapid Test Kits The government will be providing medical-grade masks and rapid test kits for students and school-based staff. In the initial phase, staff will receive kits to test at home twice per week for 2.5 weeks. More information about the tests and what to do with the results are posted on the Alberta Government website, including a video about how to use the test and a fact sheet translated into multiple languages. We expect that these supplies will arrive by the end of next week. Information about distribution will come from your school/Area office once these items are available. JES | Kindergarten Registration Please continue to share this with any neighbors, family, or friends who will be considering Kindergarten registration for the 2022 – 2023 school year. Kindergarten Registration across our board for the 2022 – 2023 school year opens January 17, 2022. The CBE has moved to a digital registration process that will go live January 17, 2022 through a new program called SchoolEngage. - New families (families who do not already have children in CBE schools) will need to create a SchoolEngage account first before registering their child(ren).
- Following confirmation of this each family will receive their child's CBE Student ID# AND information on how to create their MYCBE account.
- Both accounts will be linked once they click on SE link from their PWS parent portal account.
- Parents with children attending school and have existing MyCBE / PowerSchool Accounts will automatically have a SchoolEngage Account created for them that will appear as a menu options on their accounts. Families will need to click on the SchoolEngage tab and it will take them to the online registration forms to register a new student.
Starting January 17, 2022, please visit the Registration page on the CBE website for further information. CBE | Winter Break Travel Once again, we remind families planning or returning from travel outside of Canada to keep informed about changing travel regulations and restrictions. This could impact your child's return to classes. Travel information on the CBE website: Families considering international travel must follow direction from Alberta Health Services and the Government of Canada upon returning. Their guidance is subject to change. See: Link: CBE link for parents and staff CBE | COVID- 19 Immunizations – Volunteers As of Dec. 17, 2021, all volunteers must be fully immunized to volunteer in a CBE building or to participate in field trips. Medical exemptions or rapid antigen tests will not be accepted in place of proof of full immunization. Volunteers will be required to provide the front office proof, QR Code, upon each entry. This proof will be required each time you enter as we do not collect or store this information. CBE's decision to extend its immunization policy to all volunteers balances our commitment to student, staff, and community safety with the value of parent involvement in their child's education and in their school communities. It is important to note that parents and guardians are not required to be fully immunized when picking up or dropping off their children or attending scheduled in-person meetings. I went a little over board this year with some pyrotechnics I was certain would secure me the win… nearly set my kitchen on fire and came in 4th out of 4 entries when the judging was complete.
