Dear JCS Students, Families, and Community Members,
We are excited to have the 2023-2024 school year underway; the train is on the tracks! Our grade level assemblies during our first few days coming back from break were excellent as we welcomed students back and reviewed how to be successful Ravens. We especially enjoyed our Link Assembly on the first day of school, where Grade 10 students had the opportunity to meet our Link Leaders and other grade 10s, to have some fun, and to get high school off to a great start!
As the fall weather turns, we are also very excited about our ongoing fall athletics season! All of our fall teams are underway; please see the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association website for current schedules, locations and upcoming playoff match-ups. We do remind families that we are a limited gym, so we ask that only students and family members from the two participating schools attend athletic events hosted at JCS.

It has also been an important past few days as we honoured and commemorated residential school survivors, their families and loved ones, and our Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. As a community, we wore our orange shirts on Thursday and we hope that over the weekend all families were able to join in on one of the many events to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation throughout the city.
We have also received an update from Alberta Education that Diploma Exams will be weighted at 30% for this school year. Please visit the Alberta Education website for more information on preparation and the organization of all upcoming provincial assessments.

And finally, thank you to all of our families who were able to attend our Meet the Teacher on September 28. It was wonderful to welcome parents/guardians into our building. Many parents expressed their newfound appreciation for all the stairs students have to climb in a day!
Dear Joane Cardinal-Schubert Students, Parent/Guardians, and Community,
Welcome to both our returning staff and students and those staff, students and families new to Joane Cardinal-Schubert, home of Innovators, Artists, Scholars, and Champions. We are eager to welcome you to the 2023-2024 school year and are excited about the things we will accomplish throughout the coming year. We hold important the values of inclusiveness, belonging, and our welcome, safe, caring and respectful learning environment.
Students, there are many exciting opportunities awaiting you this year, and ways to share your voice and get connected, including the start-up of Fall sports. Please take some time to look through the School Start Up information.
Parents and Guardians, please consider getting involved with our School Council, and partner with us in supporting our learners.
We look forward to an outstanding year together.
As we enter our 5th year with students in the building, I think the best word to focus on is optimism: “hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something". As our grade 10 students enter into their first year of high school, we are optimistic that they will bring an energy and positivity to the building that we can build on over the next 3 years. As our grade 11 students return to JCS, we are optimistic that the foundations they built last year in grade 10 will be improved, supported and expanded with new learning and new experiences. As our grade 12 students return for their last year of high school, we are optimistic that they will spread their wings more and more as they get ready to SOAR beyond JCS in the short 180 teaching days left before graduation. We are optimistic that this year is going to be a fabulous year, with no interruptions, isolations, extended breaks, lock-downs, and that Covid-19 will move further and further away in our rear view mirrors. We are optimistic about being able to replace those interruptions from the past few years with trips, more extra-curricular opportunities, events, and community togetherness. Welcome to the 2022-23 school year!
Wow – I can't believe we are in year four already. And, I can't believe that we haven't had a “normal" year yet. Year one, we only had grade 10 and 11 students. Year two was interrupted by Covid and from mid-March on, I was alone in the building as students and staff attempted to adjust to schooling on-line. Year three was a mixture of isolations, lock-downs, in-school classes, and on-line classes. Now, we find ourselves at the start of year four, challenged by rising Covid cases, full hospital ICU beds, and discussions around vaccines tearing families, communities, and the world apart; it looks like another less-than-normal school year. However, in the midst of whatever this might be called when it is over, there are some huge positives that we need to focus on.
More important and inspiring than all else, there is a positive vibe in our school – our students are happy, smiling, and enjoying reconnecting with their peers and their teachers. There is excitement as preparations are being made for the school play and band and choir concerts. Students are thrilled to be competing in athletics once again, some for the first time ever, despite parents and siblings being unable to attend. We've also been able to get together in our community groups to continue to build relationships. All of this positivity will go a long way to help us through the things that are still strange – not being able to see student faces completely and the ever present fear that we will return to schooling on-line…
As the Principal of a large school, I am proud to work with 1600 strong, resilient students who are starting to use their voices to make change and capture what they need or want out of this world. They are working with peers and staff to build their legacies and make JCS a place for all students – all of the time. This school is their school and I am so excited to continue to build the culture and community here at JCS into what I hope will be our first step towards our new normal.
It is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the inaugural school year of Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School. We are all very excited to be welcoming students and finally having the hallways and classrooms filled with energy and enthusiasm for learning. It is our mission to assist every student to achieve their unique potential, to feel welcome, connected and part of creating the culture at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School. We will challenge each student to grow academically, socially and emotionally. We have a great team of teachers ready to create classroom activities that will engage students in work that is relevant to their life and their future.
I apologize for the reduced level of communication up to this point. There are a number of reasons, which are not meant as excuses, but may help explain the reality of our situation this year. We were unable to access the Student Information System since the middle of June as the CBE transitioned to Power School. Therefore, we did not have access to any student information (time tables or email addresses) again until recently. At that time there was some caution required in advertising our first day of school as September 4th. But at this time, two weeks from welcoming students into our building, we are confident we will be ready!!
We hope that you will find our website helpful and informative. For quick updates and announcements we will use the school’s Instagram account (JCS_Ravens), Twitter account (JCS_Ravens) as well our website. Our website is updated on a regular basis and will provide more in depth details of the activities at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School. Please refer to these sites on a regular basis.
I am honored to serve as the principal of Joane Cardinal-Schubert. It is truly a privilege to be part of this new community. It is my hope that we can work together to build strong, positive relationships where students are cared for, pushed to excel and become contributing members of tomorrow’s society. Please feel free to contact me at any time at firstname.lastname@example.org
Once again, welcome to our new school!
Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School
The 2018-2019 school year is going to be an exciting time! We look forward to opening the doors to our magnificent new school that focuses on elements of personalization, opportunities for students to achieve their highest level of understanding, tasks/assignments that are both challenging and meaningful, flexible learning structures, home/community involvement, positive relationships, and welcoming spaces.
Our wish for students who attend Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School is that they have a high school journey that is meaningful, active and inclusive. We dreamed of a high school where students are free take sensible risks with their education to evolve themselves as learners and as citizens. To help students with this journey, we have connected them to a Learning Community where they will develop authentic relationships with others to strengthen connections between subjects while developing the knowledge and skills necessary to meet their goals.
To personalize student learning, we will provide students with choice. We encourage students to be responsible self-advocates to help understand their learning preferences and participate in extracurricular pursuits that will strengthen their education. We hope students reflect on course outcomes and the skills needed to achieve them while thinking about all of the possibilities to get involved in this journey as they develop into strong leaders, learners and citizens.
The staff at JCSHS has worked diligently to create a positive opening culture and look forward to welcoming our future Ravens in bringing their unique gifts to our learning community.
