DANCE - COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
The goal of the Dance Program at John G. Diefenbaker High School is to provide students with means of navigating cultural art and the role it plays in a variety of societies; to experience dance as a method of developing and strengthening, interpersonal relationships and living a vibrant, active lifestyle. The program celebrates the diversity of dance as a Fine Art and method of communication. Students develop confidence in creative work, becoming leaders, and performers. This capacity is seen through students taking on leadership roles within class and performing for members of the community.
All dance students have the opportunity to work with the instructor and guest artists who bring unique choreographies to the students.
Dancers also attend a workshop and professional dance show at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks each semester.
All students have the opportunity to perform at events such as assemblies, pep rallies, and fine arts showcases.
All dance courses are non-auditioned, occur in the timetable during the school day, and are available to all.
In Dance 15, students explore elements of a variety of dance genres, foundational concepts in dance as a form of communication, and learn the tenets of choreographing and stage presence.
Dance 25 students take on leadership roles in class and explore the choreography process in more depth. They evaluate the relationship between dance and culture.
Dance 35 students become adept at choreographing and critiquing choreography and performance, and teach their own choreography to the class.
