Social Studies

Social Studies courses explore relationships among individuals in various societies and between societies. You examine cultural, economic, ethical, legal, political and religious issues that communities face. These courses focus on understanding: who am I, what kind of society do I want, and how do I and others shape our world?

April News

The semester is off to a busy start, and there are many exciting and engaging learning opportunities for students. Recently, a number of classes journeyed to Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park, where the students spent the day learning about Indigenous culture and history. In April, another visit to Valour Canada at the Military Museum is on the horizon, where students will learn in-depth about Canada’s role at Vimy Ridge in World War I. In May, Grade 12 classes will be visiting the annual Holocaust Symposium at Mount Royal University to learn first hand about the dangers of hatred and extremist ideology from Holocaust survivors and their families.

In addition, Grade 10 Social Studies classes will be participating in our annual Global Issues Expo on Thursday May 2nd.
Spring has sprung, and it is election time in Alberta! The provincial government recently called an election to be held on Tuesday, April 16th. The Social Studies department is excited to be organizing Student Vote 2019 at JGD, where students will follow and discuss campaign issues and platforms in their social classes and TAs. On April 10th, all students will be invited to cast a “student” vote in the Learning Commons, and the results will be tabulated nationally. Of course, we always encourage students to discuss issues relating to the election at home! For more information about the Student Vote program, go to http://studentvote.ca/ab2019.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact your son or daughter’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns about Social Studies courses.
