Course Content

Art education is concerned with the organization of visual material, with having individuals think and behave as artists, with pointing out the values that surround the creation and cherishing of art forms, with ways in which people express their feelings in visual forms, and with making and defending qualitative judgements about art works.

There are 3 major components of visual learning: drawing, compositions and encounters with art. We will explore these components using a variety of materials and resources (pencil, pen, ink, charcoal, paint, books, slide shows, computers, each others work, etc.)

Expectations of students

include prompt arrival to class; focused behaviour in class; bringing all appropriate materials to class on a daily basis; and respect for classroom space, art supplies and of other people. Students are also expected to hand in all required assignments each term before the mark cut-off dates that are established by the school. Students will be informed of the date each term and well in advance of the deadline. All art projects will be marked out of 10 and the report card mark each term will be an average of the marks earned that term.

Grade 7, 8 & 9

The Art Program includes work in pen & ink, pencil crayon, chalk pastels, acrylic paint and plaster of Paris or paper pulp. With these materials projects will be done in drawing, painting and carving. Units of study may include drawing people, drawing nature, printmaking, first nations art, masks & graphic design. The goals of the program are: to provide students with the opportunity to work with a number of different mediums; to introduce them to many ways of expressing their artistic creativity; to help students build confidence in their own talent and abilities in this field.
