In order to provide a secure learning environment for our students, parents are reminded of the following security procedures at Lake Bonavista School:
- all staff wear visible identification
- all volunteers and visitors wear visible identification tags
- all visitors and volunteers are required to enter our school only through the front doors.
Entry and Sign-in
People are welcomed into Lake Bonavista School by ringing our front doorbell/buzzer. School personnel check the front door camera’s monitor, prior to speaking to and letting in visitors. Visitors then continue to follow the standard CBE practice of reporting directly to the office upon entering our school buildings and acquiring an identification tag. If a visitor has not signed in and/or acquired an identification tag, they will be directed back to the office.
Students are taught to not open locked exterior doors for visitors and to report visitors who are not wearing visible identification to staff. The blue inside fire doors are in the open position during school hours. They are locked in the closed position before 8:15 AM and after 2:43 PM.
Visitors & Volunteers
When visiting or volunteering in the school, inform the office staff that you are present in the school upon your arrival by collecting a visitor tag and signing in the visitor binder located in the office. Office staff will contact the teacher to notify them of your arrival and to confirm it is a convenient time for you to proceed to the teaching area or for the teacher to meet you in the office. This helps us account for all people in our building for safety and security reasons and in the event of a fire drill or other emergencies.
Signing Out Students
If parents are taking a student out of the school, e.g., for a dental appointment or lunch, they must sign out their child when they leave and sign in their child when they return. The sign out and sign in binder is kept at the office. Parents are required to wait in the office area and school staff will call the classroom to have the child come to the office. Please do not proceed directly to the teaching areas. Under no circumstances will a child be released to an adult who comes to a classroom. Notify the school through written communication or by phone if your child is being picked-up by someone other than a parent or guardian. Please include the name of the person who is picking-up your child, the date(s) and the time(s). Please inform the pick-up/drop-off person that office staff may request identification from them if they are not known to school staff.
If you have arranged to meet your child at dismissal times, please wait at a prearranged location outside of your child’s dismissal doors. This reduces congestion in our office, front foyer and mudroom areas. If you are delayed for any reason and are not at the outside prearranged location, please instruct your child(ren) to proceed to the front doors, ring the door buzzer, go to the office and wait there until you arrive. Parents are requested not to enter or wait in the mudrooms or teaching areas. This procedure is not only for student safety, but provides a less disrupted learning environment and less crowded mudrooms for all of our students.
Appointments Required to Talk to Teachers
If you wish to speak to administration or your child’s teacher, you are requested to make an appointment. This ensures you have uninterrupted time together. Teachers’ first priority before and after school is the supervision of their students; therefore, it is not an appropriate time to discuss your child’s progress and needs.
Students are to arrive at school no more than 15 minutes before the commencement of classes as supervision is not provided before that time. Supervision by school staff starts at 8:00 AM. Kindergarten students require their parent/caregiver to meet the kindergarten teacher at/or near their assigned door at the beginning and the end of each day. Kindergarten students who take the bus are greeted and supervised by teachers at the beginning of their school day and they are escorted directly to the bus at dismissal.
There is no supervision on the school grounds after the school dismissal bell at 2:43 PM. CBE busing students are supervised by staff while they board their assigned bus. For reasons of safety, we encourage students to proceed directly to their bus or homes (or their child care provider) after school. Students who do not take the bus and who display inappropriate behaviour on the playground after school hours will be directed to leave school property.
If it is necessary to change after-school routines, we encourage families to make plans before the school day starts. Students are requested not to make after school plans with their friends during or after the school day. If a friend of your child(ren) should come to your home unexpectedly after school, it is advisable to phone the child’s parents to ensure that they know where their child is and that it meets with their (and your) approval. For safety reasons, students may not leave the school grounds at any time during school hours without parents previously notifying the school and the student receiving permission from the office.
School Grounds and Creative Playground Structures
Our East and West play structures and our school grounds are used by our students throughout the school day for active living and recess activities. For safety, security and supervision reasons, we request that non-Lake Bonavista School people (of all ages) refrain from using the play structures and the school grounds during school hours.
It is essential that current telephone contacts be provided to the school so that you can be contacted in the event of illness or an emergency. Please ensure these are updated as contact numbers change.
Documentation of Custody/Access
The school must remain neutral in any custodial disputes. If custody or access has been determined by a court of law, the school must be provided with a copy of the court order if a parent is requesting restricted access by another parent.
