Weekly Message - October 21, 2022

Dear Parents / Guardians,

We have a very exciting week here at Marion Carson School. Our first learning celebration was held and was a huge success. Students in Grade 3 and 4 Mandarin Bilingual Program and Grade 4 Community English Program worked together to share their learnings since the start of the school year about the virtue of Truth. They shared learning surrounding the animal “Turtle" and their connection to the school-wide theme “I Belong". Our next whole school gathering is on November 10th with a focus on Remembrance Day and connections to the virtue “Courage". It was wonderful to have many parents back in the building for this performance. We will continue to invite parents/guardians who have children attending Marion Carson within the grades performing for any given learning celebration throughout the year. Teachers will communicate when your child's class is leading a celebration.

Here are a few things to note…

1.     Photo Retakes (if you missed retake day or are in Mandarin Bilingual Kindergarten):

Parents can book an appointment in the studio if they've missed retake day. Parents can go online at https://booknow.appointment-plus.com/1dqj327c/ to book an appointment. Choose 'Fall Individual' under the Session, and 'Calgary Studio - Fall' under Select School. The site will show available dates. Once you select a date, please follow the prompts to complete booking. A confirmation email will be sent once completed. Upcoming dates are October 22nd / 29th and November 12th / 19th.

2.     Jacket Racket

We are continuing to have families drop off lightly used or new items for our Jacket Racket collection. Thank you for your support. We will continue to collect items until October 31, 2022. Should your family be personally in need of such items, we would ask that you email your child's teacher directly, or the school office at MarionCarson@cbe.ab.ca. before October 24th, 2022.

3.     Hallowe'en Activities – October 31, 2022

Techers will be communicating the various activities that may be occurring within their classrooms on this day. As a whole school, students will be engaging the following activities:

a)     Hallowe'en Dance in the afternoon (thank you to School Council for providing a DJ and decorations)

b)    Pumpkinella: on October 31st families are invited to take to school a decorated or carved pumpkin to put on display in the Library Learning Commons.

 - Participating students should carry their pumpkin to and from school in a tear-proof bag.

 - Please label your pumpkin with a permanent marker

 - All pumpkins not picked up by 4pm on October 31st will be composted

c)     Costumes: Students have the option to wear school appropriate costumes. Costumes that have fully covering masks, toy weapons, or that may scare students in our school community will be asked to be removed

 - Please note that costumes are optional. If your child(ren) will not be wearing a costume, they are welcome wear orange and/or black clothing, or dress as per a typical school day.

 - Your child's teacher will communicate when students will be invited to dress up in costumes should families choose.

4.     Demographic Verification and In-School Forms:

As required by Alberta Education, each family must complete a demographic verification form online through your Parent MyCBE account (one per student). The deadline of September 26th has passed, and it is critical that this information be updated in case of emergency. Instructions for parents can be found at School Engage Quick Tips for Parents. Please also make note of the September 9th Weekly Message that was sent home with school-based forms requiring your attention. We ask that you ensure that all applicable forms are completed if you have not already done so. This includes forms such as the Admirable Use Policy for 2022-2023, or the Student Health Plan form. Please email your teacher, or contact the school office if you are unsure if you have completed certain forms.

5.     Casino Volunteers

o   Our School Council / Parent Association-led casino is quickly approaching, and we are still in need of 4 volunteers for November 9th and 10th! If not filed, then we lose this opportunity this year and in the future.
