Weekly Message - Feb. 15, 2023

1.     No school for students from Feb 16 through to and including Feb 20, 2023

Due to Teacher's Convention and Family Day students do not have school Feb. 16, 17, and 20th. School resumes Tuesday, February 21, 2023.

2.     Pink Shirt Day - Feb 22, 2023

Students are encouraged to wear pink-coloured clothing. Bullying and cyberbullying jeopardize learning and can severely impact a child's mental, emotional, and physical health. Pink Shirt Day is celebrated annually in February where staff and students have the opportunity to highlight the ongoing work of bullying prevention. We are encouraging students to wear a pink-coloured shirt to stand-up against bullying.

3.     Staffing Update

We are happy to announce that Mrs. Parshina has accepted the Library Assistant position at Marion Carson School. We would like to congratulate her on this new role within our library learning commons and school. Mrs. Parshina will officially joining the Marion Carson team starting February 21, 2023.

4.     Learning Celebration – February 24, 2023 (Mandarin Bilingual Program students in Grade 1 and 2)

Mandarin Bilingual program students in our Grade 1 and 2 classes are leading our upcoming learning celebration on February 24th, 2023 starting at 9:50am. This celebration focuses on the Eagle representing the virtue of “Love". Students will share their learning around loving yourself, such as recognizing your own talents and positive self-talk, as well as love for others through kindness and optimism. The students have already begun their learning mission by being 'kindness ninjas' sending messages of kindness to classrooms throughout the school.

We would like to invite parents of performing students from the Mandarin Bilingual program in Grade 1 and 2 to attend if able. Please note that due to fire safety code we have to limit our parent viewing to the first 100 parents. Doors will open at 9:45am. If waiting outside, we ask that you please line up along the Main West Door sidewalk leading out towards Varsity Drive.

5.     Constables on Varsity Drive

Many of you will have noticed that as of late we have had the City of Calgary Police increasing their presence around our school and specifically on Varsity Drive. They spent their first visit educating people about the rules of the road. Many of the common infractions noted and discussed with adults  included unsafe crossing of the street and the importance of using crosswalks, ensuring that student drop off occurs in designated areas and in ways that do not block traffic flow along the already busy street, illegal U-turns in the school zone, and cars stopping in the designated school bus zone. We appreciate that community members continue practicing safe drop off and pick-up of students and choose safety over convenience. We have been informed that our shared roadway will continue to have this support moving forward and encourage all parents to familiarize themselves with the rules of the road for their safety and the safety of others.

6.     Fun Lunch - Friday, February 24, 2023

Reminder that The next fun lunch will be on February 24, 2023 with CoCo Brooks, which is now live on the healthy hunger website! https://healthyhunger.ca/ The deadline for ordering will be February 19, 2023 midnight! Please note, Fun Lunch on February 24 is being offered to Grade 1- 6 classes and ONLY Community Kindergarten class as this is the only kindergarten class that will be in attendance over the nutrition break on that day.

7.     School Council / Parent Association Meeting

Our next School Council / Parent Association meeting is this Wednesday, February 22nd, 2023 at 7pm and will be occurring in a hybrid format both in our Library Learning Commons (doors open at 6:45pm) and online (link below). This meeting will include a Planning and Engagement presentation around budget and fees for the 2023-24 school year where we will be looking for parent feedback. We look forward to connecting with parents/guardians about our school community and initiatives. Meeting minutes from the January 2023 meeting can be found on our school website here.
