Community English and Mandarin Bilingual program students in our Kindergarten classes did an amazing job sharing their classroom learning as they led our school in topics such as respect for self, others, and nature/the environment. Great work Kindergarten students!

1.     Spring Fling:

We hope to see you at tonight's Spring Fling Dance. If you haven't purchased your tickets online, they will also be available at the door (cash only). A reminder that there will be pizza, snacks and more for sale to keep your dance moves going (while supplies last).

2.     K-4 Swimming

K-4 Swimming classes start this week and continue through to May 11, 2023. Please follow any classroom teacher guidance to support a great experience for all students while at Sir Winston Churchill Aquatic and Recreation Centre. Please refer to the schedule sent today by School Messenger for the specific dates and times that your child's class is participating. We are very short of male volunteers with security clearance. If you have your security clearance and are available to support any of our classrooms (whether your child's or another), please contact your child's teacher or the school office to offer your support.

3.     Music Monday – May 1, 2023

Monday, May 1st, is Music Monday. It is a special day that is recognized by many schools across Canada as a day to celebrate music.

Students at Marion Carson will be celebrating music by playing instruments around the school. Students who have signed up to share during this event have chosen to play a piece of music either during Soft Entry or at Lunch.  They will be playing at the specific station for which they have signed up. Please ask your child about Music Monday. If your child has signed up to play a simple piece of music, please remind them to prepare, including bringing their instrument to the school on Monday morning (unless it's a piano which we will provide).

4.     Hats on for Mental Health

On May 3, students, and all Albertans are invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good metal health. We at Marion Carson School are inviting students to wear hats of all shapes and sizes to encourage students and teachers to build an understanding surrounding mental health and the importance of removing any stigma associated with mental illnesses. We encourage families to connect with their children about mental health and wish to share the supports below.\

-        Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868

-        Mental Health Helpline: 1-877-303-2642

5.     Class Requests for 2023-24 School Year

As we approach the final months of the school year, we begin our planning process in creating our class lists for the 2023-24 school year. Current year classroom teachers create class lists in consultation with admin and teacher specialists. Through this process, students are placed in a classroom believed to support a most successful learning experience for each child as a whole throughout the upcoming school year. Should you have a specific request or additional information to support class placement specific to your child's education, we invite you at this time to email our school at MarionCarson@cbe.ab.ca.

Please note that requests will only be considered if of an educational nature and which include a detailed reasoning to support the request. Although all requests are considered, they are not guaranteed. Please submit any requests before May 24, 2023.

6.     Free Session - Understanding Social Media, Child and Youth Well-Being Series for Families and Caregivers

The Calgary Board of Education is inviting all community members to join us for an inspiring evening of learning with experts in understanding social media. Social media has been around for decades and is commonly used by all. These digital platforms allow any user to create or share content in forms of posts, photos, videos, and connection. Teenagers need support and education to develop the skills to manage their social media use. This session will explore social media use among youth and tools to help your child learn to use social media platforms in a health and responsible way.

On May 2, the CBE's Well-Being team will host a free online session where parents will be able to join and learn from to experts in the field of health promotion , ask questions and receive follow-up materials. You are invited to join us at the virtual session from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Understanding Social Media Child and Youth Well-Being Series for Families and Caregivers
Tuesday, May 2, 2023 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Click HERE on Tuesday May 2 at 6:30pm to join the session

CBE educators believe that parents and caregivers can inspire their kids to make healthy lifestyle choices and increase protective factors — in order to do so, they need the right tools and information. Since our understanding of student health and well-being is evolving, it is important for parents to stay up-to-date on the same information so everyone is supporting student success.

This is the last session offered in a five-part Child and Youth Well-Being for Families and Caregivers learning series that is offered at no-cost to all Calgary Board of Education employees, families, and community members between December 2022 and May 2023. The intention of the series is to advance student well-being by raising family and caregiver's understanding of a variety of health-related topics. You are a key partner in your child's education and student well-being is critically linked to student achievement.

7.     Marion Carson Run Club:

Our first run club today was a great success with hundreds of students making the choice to attend. Although they will continue on Fridays, our next running club event will be on Thursday , May 4, as there is no school for students on Friday, May 5. We look forward to seeing everyone back for another run.  Students and parents are welcome to join the running club whether they attended the first session or not as all Run Club Fridays are inclusive of everyone.

Great news! Our school is currently 3rd place in the Earn and Burn Calgary Scotiabank Marathon contest. If your child has shown interest in the running club, we encourage you to consider signing up for the race and name our school as you sign-up. If we can get up to first place, we could win $2000 towards equipment at our school. Click here to sign-up.
