We recognize that learning is a continuous process and that students learn at different rates. Therefore, we believe that evaluation should be continuous and should indicate each student’s progress within the program of studies. Parents are encouraged to maintain contact with teachers regarding student progress.
Two report cards will be sent home during the year – one in December and the second in June.
Written comments will continue to be part of the reporting process. Schools offer three scheduled conferences / conversations with parents to provide additional information about their child’s learning and achievement. Ongoing, as-needed communication between parents and teachers will also provide parents with current assessment information.
Kindergarten Early Years Evaluation (EYE-TA)
All CBE Kindergarten teachers us a developmental screening tool with their students. This assessment tool is called the Early Years Evaluation (EYE-TA). This tool provides teachers with a framework to use to gather observations of students in the classroom and in other learning environments within the school (such as in the gym, during library, in music class, etc.). The purpose of the EYE-TA is to assist teachers in assessing the skills of their students as they begin school and to design instruction to meet the needs of all children.
The Early Years Evaluation gathers information on students in five areas:
- Awareness of self and environment
- Social skills and approaches to learning
- Cognitive skills
- Language and communication
- Physical development
Teachers share the information with parents during conferences after the assessment is completed. Kindergarten teachers will work with parents and other members of the learning team to help get their students off to the right start on their lifelong learning journey.
