Midnapore Staff's Indigenous Professional Learning Day Oct. 18

On Monday, October 18, all Midnapore School staff members participated in our first Indigenous Education Professional Learning Day.  It was an exciting day on many fronts – to have all staff learning together (including facility operators and support staff members), to hear the wise words of many of our local Elders (provided through system videos), to engage in our book study using the book “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer, and to take part in land-based learning activities around our schoolyard and over in Fish Creek Park.

Sarah Gordon-Cooper, our regular program Kindergarten teacher (who has recently been certified as a Forest School instructor) led us through our land-based learning activities.  Staff members were able to conduct field trip risk assessments for walking field trips within close proximity to our school.  Staff were able to participate in land-based learning activities they could potentially use to engage students at different grade levels.  Staff were also involved in rich discussions to explore Indigenous world views, reflect on their own understandings and then given time to plan for future learning activities with students.  We believe this day will lead to the further creation of rich, meaningful, land-based learning activities for Midnapore students.

If you have questions about any of our staff professional learning opportunities, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher or to Mr. Bhardwaj (Assistant Principal) or myself.
