New Assistant Principal Midnapore School

Good afternoon Midnapore Parents and families,

I am excited to announce the appointment of our new Assistant Principal.

Meagan Song will be the new Assistant Principal of Midnapore School effective August 28, 2023. Meagan has taken the time to introduce herself in the short blurb below:

Dear Community and School Members, My name is Meagan Jia Rong (加蓉) Song and I am delighted to have the opportunity to introduce myself as the new Assistant Principal at Midnapore School. I am eager to collaborate with students, parents, teachers, and staff to foster a dynamic and inclusive learning environment. I am very passionate about literacy instruction and language acquisition, and have a Masters Degree focused on reading interventions and the Science of Reading. With experience as a Learning Leader at Abbeydale and Dr. Oakley, as well as with my most recent experience as Assistant Principal at Dr. Oakley, I am excited to share my knowledge around personalizing learning and providing high quality reading and writing interventions to support students at Midnapore. I recognize that Midnapore is a school with both Mandarin Bilingual and Community classes, and I am also thrilled to be able to learn and get to know all of the unique talents that teachers and students at Midnapore possess. Being bi-racial (of both Chinese and French-Canadian heritage), I am very familiar with the benefits of immersing children in multi-cultural and multi-lingual environments. I am so excited to have the opportunity to share my love and appreciation for my Chinese heritage within Midnapore’s school community. I am looking forward to meeting everyone this September. Sincerely 敬上, Meagan 加蓉 Song

Last Message from Mrs. Goldenberg

Dear parents and guardians,

It is so hard to believe this is my last week at Midnapore School. Many thoughts come to mind as I reflect on these last six months. I have felt so lucky working side by side with an amazing community of students, staff and families. At the beginning of my acting principal role, I introduced the story “The Golden Rule”. Students throughout these months have demonstrated the virtue of “Treating others the way you want to be treated”. It is so wonderful to see kindness and generosity exhibited throughout each and every day. You should all be proud of your hard working children! In classrooms and out on the playground, your children show that they care for others. They are thoughtful, kind and compassionate human beings!

I have enjoyed working with many of you these past few months in a variety of ways including our school council and parent society executives. Thank you for your kindness and understanding as we began the year with yet another new acting principal. It has also been an amazing experience to be working alongside our Midnapore teachers and support staff. Thank you for all your support.

This month we are highlighting the Lunar New Year and the school community has been involved in so many creative and exciting activities and celebrations. The students and staff throughout the entire school have been involved in many projects that highlight the Year of the Rabbit symbolizing longevity, peace, and prosperity. My wish for all of you is long life, peace in our world and much prosperity.

On Monday, January 30, please welcome Mr. Greg Bennett as your new acting principal. He is very excited to join the incredible staff of Midnapore School.

Rebuilding Collaborative and Interactive Community Practices

Dear Midnapore School Community,

We have had many events and initiatives started since the beginning of the school year. Our school has set the intention to focus on rebuilding collaborative and interactive community practices. To support this intention, Midnapore School will be using the Indigenous Education Holistic Lifelong Learning Framework (Holistic Framework) as a guide. The Holistic Framework uses the visual of a Medicine Wheel and encourages us to consider four domains to promote well-rounded opportunities for growth and learning. Our guiding values in our school focuses on:

  • Taking care of ourselves
  • Taking care of others
  • Taking care of this place

Through these values, we are using the four domains of: Spirit, Heart, Body, and Mind to support student wellness. Our challenges coincide with each domain:

  • Spirit – Daily Mindfulness (each day 5 minutes of daily mindfulness is occurring in the classrooms)
  • Heart – Care Bucks (students earn care bucks when they are seen demonstrating kindness and caring)
  • Body – Morning Exercise (students are welcome in the school 15 minutes before school starts to participate in early morning exercises)
  • Mind – Home Reading challenge (students are encouraged to read at home)

We hope you are as excited as we are about getting back to activities that promote a strong sense of community and connection at our school.

A thank you is in order for all of our incredible parent volunteers who have supported us in the school this fall. We have had many parent volunteers so far this year. Some of these include:

  • Open Mind Healthy Living off campus program with the Grade 5 and 6 classrooms
  • Walks in the neighbourhood with many classrooms
  • Helping during our picture taking day
  • Attending school council meetings and taking on executive positions
  • Supporting Fun lunches and snacks
  • Attending field trips
  • Volunteering in our classrooms and learning commons

It has been wonderful to see parents in our assemblies and participating in our Halloween parade and dance. Thank you to all parents who are supporting our initiatives by getting their children to the school early for exercises and supporting students with home reading. We appreciate your support as we work together to make Midnapore School an amazing place of learning.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Acting Principal

Welcome to All of Our New and Returning Midnapore School Community Families!

Good afternoon Midnapore School Community,

Welcome to all of our new and returning Midnapore School community families! Our staff is truly honoured and thrilled to be part of your children’s learning journey.

First of all, I want to let you know that your principal, Shelly Pynoo, will be continuing her personal leave of absence. I am pleased and excited to announce that I will be the Acting Principal for Midnapore School. Although I retired as a CBE principal in 2017, I have continued supporting schools in the acting principal role.

As a staff, we are getting together this week to organize and plan a successful and welcoming year. We value the partnerships and relationships that are built within a school community. It truly does take a team with everyone working together towards common goals. Without the support of parents at home and through our volunteer opportunities and on School Council, the opportunities for students would not be the same.

I am looking forward to meeting with parents and students that make Midnapore School such a wonderful place to be. The excitement is in the air as we look forward to an awesome year ahead.

Reflecting on the School Year

As I sit at my desk, I am reflecting on my almost eight months at Midnapore School. I reflect on how fast the time has gone and how quickly the school year is drawing to an end. Sadly, it is also time to say good bye as I leave this school community and move to Riverbend School for the 2022-2023 school year.

The month of June is the month in which many school activities draw to a close. Teachers finish teaching units and wrap up curriculum content. A great deal of final assessments occur, report cards are written and, at the same time as wrapping up one school year, preparations for the next school year begin.

The return of pleasant weather also provides more opportunities to move teaching and learning outside. Many classes take the opportunity to complete community walks, to connect with nature and build relationships with the land. This school is blessed with being closely located near Fish Creek Park and the natural connections it provides.

Our final day of classes is Tuesday, 28 June 2022. Report cards will be available electronically through your MyCBE account. If there are any concerns about your child’s report card, teachers will be available on the morning of Wednesday, 29 June 2022 to address these concerns.

I would like to express my gratitude to the students, staff and parents of Midnapore School who welcomed me into your community and supported me during my time as acting principal. I wish you all the best for the future and I know that this school will continue to thrive with all of your support.

Have a wonderful summer and all the very best for the future!

Mike Black

Spring - Finally!

It is the end of the first week of May. The weather is improving and students can spend more time outside for physical education and community walks. After spending most of the last few months indoors, the opportunity to go outside is met enthusiastically by both staff and students!

One of our focuses over the month of April was to update physical education equipment and expand the range of activities that students can participate in. This includes carts of outdoor balls available for use at any time both for gym and for class-centered activities. Being able to offer diverse physical activities is good for students and enhances their desire to try new activities.

With the reduction in health protocols in the building, Midnapore has been able to re-implement across grade activities that have long been a strength of the community. Older students work with younger students supporting classroom activities as well as acting as junior coaches and officials for lunchtime sports. This has benefits for all participants and helps build community across grades.

With the warmer weather comes safety concerns. Young minds think “play" and may forget the traffic safety rules that keep them safe. Classes will take some over the next week to remind students about traffic safety. Additionally, warm weather brings the sun. Some students can struggle with sun exposure. If your child is one of these, please encourage then to wear a hat and bring sunscreen for outdoors. We want all students to take all necessary precautions to be safe!

Thursday, 19 May 2022 is our community 'Re-connection' evening. This is an opportunity to come and visit our school, meet teachers face-to-face, explore an art walk and observe a Lion Dance. This is not parent conferences and, if there is a need to discuss your child, please contact the teacher to arrange a time for that. There will be an opportunity to 'find' your child's missing clothing at the lost and found tables and to contribute to our UNICEF fundraiser supporting children in the Ukraine. Thanks to our two student leaders who are the driving force behind this initiative. The evening begins at 5:30pm and runs until 7:00pm. This is a 'drop in' evening and you are welcome to come, experience and leave when you want!

Midnapore School's greatest strength is being a community that works and learns together. When we work together, great things happen. Thank you for all your support!

It is hard to believe that April is here!

It is hard to believe that April is here! Students have returned from Spring Break and all the regular routines of school are back in place. Although thoughts of spring weather float through our heads, the reality of Calgary’s climate means who knows what tomorrow will bring!

In April, the process for preparing for the next school year begins in earnest. Budgeting and staffing are completed during April and submitted in May. These processes reflect the number of students projected to attend the school in the next year. Budgets and staffing are finalized in September once the number of students are confirmed.

On Tuesday, 05 April 2022, Midnapore School had its first off campus trip in two years. The Grade 6 students travelled to MidSun School to learn about junior high school and the opportunities that a new school and new grade will offer. Students arrived back excited and equipped with cool new shades!

As opportunities present themselves, more classes are exploring the chance to get students out of the building and explore their community, visit other sites in support of curriculum and to experience learning outside the school building. The benefits of experiential learning are huge. Sadly not all desired destinations are prepared for student groups but that number will get smaller as organizations gear up following the lifting of restrictions.

We are excited to see you all on Thursday, 19 May 2022. The school will host a drop-in “Re-connection” evening (5:30-7:00pm) to welcome the community back into the school. This event not about discussing student progress but rather on meeting staff face-to-face, seeing the building and doing an “art walk” of student work. School Council will be present to share information about its activities. Please join us if you are able!

Thank you for your continued support of your children and Midnapore School!

March is Here

March is here! In terms of school, it is a short month of only fourteen instructional days leading into Spring Break. Spring Break begins on Friday, 18 March 2022. Classes resume on Monday, 28 March 2022.

Last week the protocols related to Covid-19 were removed. Midnapore School, like all other schools, are determining how to ease out of the restrictions without upsetting the routines which have been in place. This process will continue throughout the remainder of the year. As a school community, we are looking forward to seeing older students supporting younger students, celebrations and performances and field trips. I can’t wait to see what the 2022-2023 school year will look like!

On Thursday, 10 March 2022, and Friday, 11 March 2022, Midnapore School will host virtual Parent Conferences. Please sign up through your MyCBE / PowerSchool account. If you are unavailable during the set time, please contact your child’s teacher to make alternative arrangements.

The last day of classes before Spring Break is Friday, 18 March 2022. Spring Break marks the transition into the last third of the school year. It is not the time to ease up or give up on learning. Over the Break, encourage your child or children to read, to watch the news and engage in discussion about world activities. I hope all students will use this time to relax and return refreshed and ready to finish the last three months of the 2021-2022 school year!

As always, thank you for your support! Parents and Guardians are an important part of the Midnapore School community!
