2022/2023 Complementary Program

Art 8

Students will explore a variety of media and techniques to create 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional art that includes drawing, painting and sculpting. Student projects will involve exploration of the impact of value, light, and color selection to reflect mood in composition. Students will explore perspective drawings, positive and negative space in compositions, and how skeletal structure can be used as the basis for creating proportional drawings or sculptures of the human figure. Additionally, students will practice critiquing their own artwork with a focus on art vocabulary and identifying the most appealing or favorite part of their finished artwork.

Concert Band 8 – Woodwind (Year Long Course)

Come experience the fun of making music with your friends. Enjoy exploring a wide variety of new music while developing your personal and ensemble performance skills with a choice of Flute, Clarinet or Saxophone. Students will have the opportunity to perform in several concerts throughout the year, perform in the AIBF music festival as well as participate in a three-day workshop retreat. Students will have leadership opportunities and can become mentors for younger students. Students are required to participate in one early morning rehearsal each week on Wednesday mornings. WE WELCOME ALL STUDENTS. No previous experience necessary. New students will be mentored by their peers. We only require enthusiasm for music. FEE: Instrumental rental $100, band resource fee $90, band camp cost TBA. Financial assistance is available for students and families who qualify and would otherwise be unable to participate.

CTF Construction 8

Career and technology foundations is a framework that supports learning experiences that allow students to explore occupational areas common to career and technology studies. In Construction 8 students will be required to use materials, machinery and tools to develop woodworking projects such as a sanding block, coat rack, or a pencil truck. These projects will develop the required skills necessary for students to design, construct, articulate and appraise a group catapult challenge modeled from the popular game angry birds.

CTF Design Studies 8

This course provides students the opportunity to determine and apply the fundamentals of various software applications such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, web design, photography, image editing, drawing, and graphic animation. The wide range of tasks being introduced will allow students to explore technical skills with organization, management, communication, and ethical decision-making being developed throughout. Projects explore design processes in two and three dimensions, problem solving, visual identity, and basic design practices, and discussions.

CTF Foods 8

CTF Foods 8 is a Career and Technology Foundations (CTF) course. Through CTF, students explore their interests and passions as they learn about various career possibilities and occupational areas. Cooking-related challenges or tasks provide students with an opportunity to develop critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills. Foods 8 focuses on kitchen safety, appetizers and desserts. Typical recipes may include cakes, dips, pizza, tacos, pastries, specialty drinks, ice cream, crepes, tarts, and pies.

Drama 8

Let’s create together! We will first learn how to control and then change our voices around through an accent unit, from there will be performances using improvisation - a fun style that blends comedy and the skill of thinking quickly. From there we will perform in and create masks to create characters with different visual styles and finally we will look at theatrical design and how costumes, sets, sound, and lights all have an impact on theatre.

Guitar 8

This course is designed to build on musical skills that were covered in grade 7 Ukulele. Students will have an opportunity to develop skills by learning more complex chord progressions and rhythms than in previous years. Students will also have an opportunity to explore some of the more advanced techniques that are taught in grade 9 guitar such as riffs, picking and leads. Through various songs, students will gain an appreciation for music genres, song structure, and creating music for performance purposes.
